George Zimmerman trial: Jury could be chosen soon

Source: Orlando Sentinel

SANFORD — Attorneys in the trial of George Zimmerman wrapped up jury selection questioning this morning, which means a jury will soon be seated to try Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

The potential jurors were questioned this morning by Zimmerman defense attorney Mark O'Mara. When he finished, the jurors were sent out for lunch.

When court resumes at 2 p.m., the lawyers will discuss which jurors they want to strike from the jury pool, and begin choosing those who will ultimately try the high profile case.

Each side, state and defense, can excuse 10 jurors without having to explain why. In addition, other jurors will likely be excused "for cause" should Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson decide they're unfit.

1. Finding impartial jurors anywhere in the country is going to be

a tall order. Finding them in Florida might be impossible.

That's what happens when defense attorneys have absolutely no defense and try the victim in the press for months and months.

I know I would be far from impartial since I think the whole case hinges on Zimmerman's disobedience of the police dispatcher. Once he left his truck, he became the lowest form of vigilante.

He'd have been wiser to plead to manslaughter. He might even be out of prison by now.

It is bound to become a lot more interesting when the prosecution begins presenting its case.

10. State law. Only capital murder and eminent domain cases require 12 jurors in Florida.

SANFORD, Florida | Thu Jun 20, 2013 2:57pm EDT

(Reuters) - Lawyers in Florida's Trayvon Martin murder case selected a six-member, all-female jury on Thursday to try the high-profile case against former neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman.

The jurors, selected from a final pool of 40, will decide the fate of Zimmerman, who triggered a national debate about guns, race and equal justice before the law when he shot and killed Martin, an unarmed black teenager, in a gated community in central Florida in February 2012.
