Russian Duma passes law banning 'gay propaganda'
Source: BBC
Russia's lower house of parliament, the Duma, has passed a law imposing heavy fines for providing information about homosexuality to people under 18.
The measure was passed unanimously and will become law when approved by the upper house and President Vladimir Putin, a virtual formality.
Gay rights campaigners clashed with anti-gay activists outside the Duma.
...
The law comes in the wake of the imprisoning of members of the punk band Pussy Riot for performing an anti-Putin protest in an Orthodox cathedral in February 2012.

And let's be clear, many LGBT Russians will die before the moment of activating revulsion.
Before the children realize what's been done to them.
I wish them a speedy Stonewall.

(23,603 posts)This is not merely a case of one party or just an overwhelming majority making this stand, but all parties, from "liberal" to communist to conservative. The forces favoring gay rights have a long road ahead to overcome what is truly strong public opposition.

Thousands March Against French Gay Marriage Law
PARIS -- Tens of thousands of people protested against France's new gay marriage law in central Paris on Sunday, and police clashed with right-wing demonstrators.
The law came into force over a week ago, but organizers decided to go ahead with the long-planned demonstration to show their continued opposition as well as their frustration with President Francois Hollande, who had made legalizing gay marriage one of his keynote campaign pledges in last year's election.

Police estimated around 150,000 people took part in the demonstration in Paris, but march organizers claimed on their Twitter account that more than a million people did.
A similar protest in March drew about 300,000.
