Bill Daley forms exploratory committee

Source: Politico

Former White House chief of staff Bill Daley is the latest Obama White House alum to set his sights on higher office in Illinois, announcing on Tuesday he’s forming an exploratory campaign to run for Illinois governor.

In a video announcement on his campaign website, Daley decries the mess in Springfield, Ill. The video shows pictures of Daley with President Barack Obama in the White House and borrows the administration message of “We Can’t Wait.”

Daley would be challenging incumbent Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn in the Democratic primary. A November poll from Public Policy Polling had Quinn’s approval rate at just 25 percent, making him the least popular governor in the country according to PPP. That survey also found Daley would lead Quinn 37 percent to 34 percent in a head-to-head matchup.

Daley, the son of longtime Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley and brother of longtime former Mayor Richard M. Daley, succeeded current Mayor Rahm Emanuel in the White House as chief of staff. A banker and businessman, Bill Daley also served as secretary of commerce under President Bill Clinton.

Nor west of Randall Road. Outside of the immediate Chicago area, anything to do with Chicago is hated.

Illinois hasn't had a decent governor since Adli Stevenson II.

If Bill learned anything from his father he will attempt to flood the downstate area with anti-Daley candidates making it an election-orgy.

Won't matter. Downstaters will not vote for a Daley--or any other well-known Chicago Pol.

And, he tested his appeal to downstate voters. That test was wildly successful.

Keep in mind that fellow was a rather obscure member of the Illinois legislature, virtually unknown outside his home district. Mention the word "Daley", downstaters hear "Chicago".

and Quinn too, for that matter, and I am not running. Illinois, at this moment, is destined to elect a Republican governor in 2014.

Don't jynx it for my state. We just barely fended off the Walker-like Bill Brady in 2010. I don't want Illinois going down the path Wisconsin went.

if there`s anything that is certain in illinois is daley will be handed the nomination. and yes...he does`t stand a snowballs chance in august in the rest of the state. the only democrat that has state wide appeal is lisa madigan. so will the families flip a coin to see who they`ll run?

That is exactly what we need, another Madigan running the state.

Quinn can do nothing. Madigan runs the House. His daughter is AG. And the godfather to one of his children is Senate president. Your vote does not count in Illinois.

Ever wonder why there were two competing pension bills? So neither would pass. The brokest state becomes more broke.

Illinois is fucked. I'm retiring in a few years, then I'm packing up the wife and kids and figuring out where to go next.

She is a bad candidate. Every Illinois politician is a bad candidate.

Last week some repub comes out like he is this businessman/reformer. I have no idea of the guy's name. Anyway, he says he is not a politician - except he hired Stuart Levine to drum up business!

This state is rotten.
