Gohmert: Freedom of the press is ‘granted in the Second Amendment’

Source: Raw Story

During a Thursday rant about news that the National Security Agency (NSA) had been collecting phone records from millions of Americans, Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) seemed to be a little confused when he proclaimed that freedom of the press is “granted in the Second Amendment.”

Gohmert noted that NSA spying was just the latest example of executive branch overreach because the Obama administration had also gone after the phone records of Associated Press reporters.

“Many times these phones up here are used by reporters to call members of Congress, who have another constitutional privilege, under the constitutional — under the constitution that provides privilege for the information that is provided for — to a member of Congress,” the Texas Republican explained. “It’s not unlimited.”

“But that’s on top of the freedom of the press that’s also granted in the Second Amendment,” he added.

Instead of many worried about immigrants learning there should be a requirement for those running for Congressional offices passing a Civic test. Louie just failed the simple part. Or maybe the freedom of speech is the second amendment in the seceded country of Texas.

.... and as a judge no matter where you are working you have to
make rulings that are based on the law so I still have a hard time
w/the idea that Gohmert is just bone ass stupid but just says whatever
he wants no matter if it is true or not.

BTW I got on Texas' Rep. Steve Stockman's email list and the dumb ass
does not end w/Gohmert.

I have a hard enough time dealing with his tweets. I follow the Tea Party Nation also, they were really pissed today to find out Saudi Arabia is going to be able to fly airlines into our airports. Not to mention being a big giant liberal Soldier trying to explain that the civilians in Iraq & Afghanistan aren't evil.

Ahh they really are a bunch of basket cases.

If journalists were armed, sources would be more willing to open up and government spokesbots would be less eager to lie.

What's that? The guy is just an idiot and wouldn't know subtlety and sophistication if it shat on him? Oh. Nevermind.

and the Constitution in general. Those documents don't grant any rights. They recognize rights that most people understood to be inherent with the human condition - Granted by the Creator.

The Bill of Rights is intended to clarify the Constitution and prevent abuse of government powers.

Non-belief in an external Creator does not mean that human rights must be explicitly granted by other humans. A belief that all rights must be codified in order to exist is in modern context an authoritarian point of view, but its effect on the people in general is no different than living under a monarchy in which all rights flow from a king or queen.
