Boston Bomb Suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Getting Financial Donations
Source: ABC News
Alleged Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has told his mother that people are sending him money and that someone opened an account for him, according to a new recording of their first phone call from prison.
When his mother asked if he is in pain, Tsarnaev replied in Russian: "No, of course not. I'm already eating and have been for a long time," according to a translation by Channel 4 in the UK, which first aired the audio. The call took place last week.
"They are giving me chicken and rice now, everything is fine," he said.
Dzhokhar also told his mother that he has received at least a "thousand" dollars in a bank account that someone opened for him since his arrest. The mother says the family has also received $8,000 from individuals pledging their support, according to Channel 4.

(135,425 posts)The mother is milking this story to beat the band back in Mother Russia. A reporter had to hear the recording of the phone call to get this kind of detail.
I don't think there is any leaking--the mother is seeking out the attention.

That will likely be a long time in coming, though. They probably need the criminal case(s) settled first.

(358 posts)Here's an interesting interview with Stephen Jones, the defense lawyer of Timothy McVeigh.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/videos/news/Dzhokhar-Tsarnaev-has-good-defense-team-Timothy-McVeigh-lawyer/videoshow/19706422.cms
The video is from April 22 when the complaint against Tsarnaev was published
"I think the defense attourney in the Boston case will be under a lot of media scrutiny, public scrutiny, and certainly will be a personal challenging experience - it's an professional challenge, but I can well imagine having lived through it myself what he or she or a group of them will face in defending a client that is quickly being made by the media into the most hated man in America."
Looking at some comments here (we are on a progressive forum here, aren't we?) the media were pretty successful in demonizing someone whose guilt is still not proven neither determined in court. He's no terrorist, he's a terrorist suspect.
By the way, has anyone seen the video where his backpack explodes?

(358 posts)You mean other than a written and oral confession? Along with video evidence and a shoot out with police officers? Pretty sure that this time they have the right guy.
temmer
(358 posts)because his mental and physical condition 2 days after being heavily wounded didn't qualify him for a confession. The medicaments weren't helpful either.
With regard to the "written confession", the lawyers will certainly spotlight the strange circumstances.
He's obviously going to revoke these confessions. He just told his mother he's innocent.
Have you seen the video? Why don't they show us the video? Will the video be shown at court?

(41,832 posts)I've noticed that you post a lot of posts about this subject and seem very intent on trying to say that he is innocent or getting a bum rap.
The media haven't brainwashed anyone here about this case. Who are you reading to come to your opinion?
Nevertheless, DU is not a court of law and people can speculate or outright say he's guilty as sin.
Oh and as someone from Oklahoma, don't even dare mention that lunatic Steven Jones, McVeigh's lawyer. He's a crackpot.

(358 posts)- that's all I'm saying.
You tell me I'm denying facts? Which "facts" do I deny? Shouldn't we leave it to the Grand Jury to assess the "facts"?
I don't think it's cool to call a terrorist suspect a terrorist. Do you?
I didn't know Stephen Jones. So I took a look at wikipedia. Looks like a courageous man to me, not a crackpot.
On May 5, 1970, the day after National Guardsmen had shot and killed four students at Kent State University, Keith Green was arrested at the University of Oklahoma for carrying a Viet Cong flag in violation of a state law prohibiting the display of a "red flag or emblem of anarchy or rebellion". After 12 lawyers had refused to defend the student, Jones took the case and was promptly dismissed from the Enid, Oklahoma law firm where he was employed. Jones argued in court that the disloyalty statute was unconstitutional and the judge dismissed the case, overturning the statute. Later Jones would go on to represent Abbie Hoffman, the radical Yippie, when Oklahoma State University refused to let him speak on campus.
In 1975, Jones defended Bobby Wayne Collins who was accused of the worst mass killing in Oklahoma history at the time. Mervin Thrasher (28), his wife Sandra (27), their two young children (Penny (5) and Robert (18mos)) were senselessly murdered in their four room farm home one mile north of Woodward Oklahoma. Collins was found guilty and sentenced to death for the brutal crime. On appeal in 1977, Jones successfully had Collins death sentence commuted to a life sentence. Bobby Wayne Collins is scheduled for a parole hearing in July 2009.
Jones ran unsuccessfully for public office four times, including a U.S. Senate race against David Boren in 1990.
In 1997, Stephen Jones was the lead defense attorney for Timothy McVeigh, who was on trial for the Oklahoma City bombing. McVeigh wanted to use the "necessity defense," but Jones took a different tack, even traveling to other countries in search of evidence because he believed that McVeigh did not act alone in the bombing. McVeigh was convicted on all counts and executed in 2001.

Usually the Son of Sam law applies to books or stories written about their crime(s). It takes away the financial incentive to sell their story.
