Pro-Israel US groups plan $100m effort to unseat progressives over Gaza

Pro-Israel groups are pumping millions into this years heated congressional races, singling out progressives who have voiced criticism of the Israeli government and its relentless campaign in Gaza. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac) is betting that $100m will be enough to fight back a wave of progressive dissent over Israels war in Gaza this election cycle.
After investing heavily in the 2022 midterms, Aipac is now doubling down on its electoral efforts. Aipac and other pro-Israel groups, such as Democratic Majority for Israel, have already identified some high-profile targets in this years congressional elections including the New York congressman Jamaal Bowman and the Missouri congresswoman Cori Bush.
Progressive leaders have made clear that they will not go down without a fierce fight, and outrage over the war in Gaza, which has killed more than 33,000 Palestinians, has rallied supporters to push back against pro-Israel lobbying groups. The unexpected strength of the uncommitted primary campaign in states like Michigan and Minnesota has underscored that Gaza is weighing heavily on the minds of progressive voters this election cycle, and their mobilization could complicate campaign efforts by groups like Aipac.
But combating $100m is no easy task, and progressives will need to use every possible resource to protect some of their most vulnerable candidates.

(2,840 posts)Have brainwashed the public into believing that Democrat=Liberal, it's worse than "liberals" 'single issue' You can be sure all democrats from Prez on down will be tarred equally. I intuit this is going to become a huge problem for us, and I see no way out of it. These spenders have really insured the loss of democracy world wide for their single issue. It's too bad diplomacy is such a nasty word these days, because I firmly believe Biden is trying his best. It's not for nothing media from places other than just us is listing the new axis as trump, putin, Netanyahu. And yet we still allow Trump to receive high level dignitaries from other countries like he's already emperor, Logan act be darned. SMDH

Even more dangerous would be that the ads against progressives wont be clear about the reasons for the ads. These ads could be very underhanded and dishonest by criticizing the progressives about something completely unrelated to their disgust with massacre in Gaza. Like maybe calling them socialists, while ironically, Israel gets more free money from the US than any other nation.

I did not find within your posted links any reference to the progressives in congress calling Biden Genocide Joe as you declared. Dont try editing it out now.
There WAS a group of protesters in The Hill piece:
As a result, protests have followed Biden across the U.S. by demonstrators calling for a cease-fire, something the administration, in agreeing with Israel, says would only allow Hamas to regroup and rearm. Chants that have followed Biden include calling him genocide Joe.
Those are not members of Congress.
So they would not be getting hit for
calling Biden Genocide Joe. Its insane to think any Dem member of Congress would pair those words.
Yeah, so basically, you misrepresented the facts. Or in other words, an untruth. Maybe you can find a stronger argument based on the truth?

(51,698 posts)The exact headline is: "Democratic Rep. Tlaib accuses Biden of supporting Palestinian genocide and warns of political ramifications" https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/03/politics/tlaib-biden-palestinian-genocide/index.html She was calling Biden pro-genocide, like the crowds she encouraged to vote "uncommitted" in the primary and who called him "Genocide Joe." Saying Biden supported genocide is the same as calling him Genocide Joe and affirms that false moniker.
As far as the NYTimes article, here's a Vox article on the same event, namely the censure of Tlaib for her "river to the sea" language:

The censure resolution, introduced by Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA), accuses Tlaib of promoting false narratives about Hamass brutal October 7 attack on Israel and calling for the destruction of the state of Israel. One of the flashpoints was a slogan used in a video she shared on social media calling for freedom from the river to the sea which critics say calls for the abolition of Israel as a Jewish state...

(51,698 posts)You don't like Vox? Google "Tlaib censure," youll get plenty of similar decriptions of the bipartisan censure of Tlaib from other mainstream reputable news outlets. Better yet, read the text of the actual House Resolution, which both Democrats and Republicans voted for and passed:
Whereas Representative Tlaibs October 8 statement claimed that Hamas October 7 attack on the Jewish people was partly attributable to United States security aid provided to Israel, which ignores the fact that the Iron Dome, a co-developed air defense system, saved lives that day by intercepting rockets launched from the Gaza Strip against Israeli civilian targets;
Whereas, on October 18, 2023, Representative Tlaib continued to knowingly spread the false narrative that Israel intentionally bombed the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital on October 17 after United States intelligence, Israeli intelligence, and President Biden assessed with high confidence that Israel did not cause the explosion;
Whereas, on November 3, 2023, Representative Tlaib published on social media a video containing the phrase from the river to the sea, which is widely recognized as a genocidal call to violence to destroy the state of Israel and its people to replace it with a Palestinian state extending from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea;
Whereas Representative Tlaib doubled down on this call to violence by falsely describing from the river to the sea as an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence despite it clearly entailing Israels destruction and denial of its fundamental right to exist; and
Whereas Representative Tlaib has repeatedly displayed conduct entirely unbecoming of a Member of the House of Representatives by calling for the destruction of the state of Israel and dangerously promoting false narratives regarding a brutal, large-scale terrorist attack against civilian targets inside the sovereign territory of a major non-NATO ally while hundreds of Israeli and American hostages remain in terrorist captivity: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That Representative Rashida Tlaib be censured.

(7,386 posts)I'm deeply disturbed by so-called progressives embracing positions of long-stading Antisemites. I won't say these Progressives are Anti-semnites themsevles, rather I think they are falling for a false-narrative.
Note that I am NOT excusing the wrongs Israel has committed, especially under Likud rule, but I think it's no mistake that the world falls so easily into a narrative where the Jews are evil and repsonsible for all the wrongs on the world. I'd expect Progressives to be more aware of the history of oppression than that.
