Woman sentenced to prison for stealing and selling Biden's daughter's diary

Source: The Guardian

Tue 9 Apr 2024 15.54 EDT

A Florida woman was sentenced Tuesday to a month in prison and three months of home confinement for stealing and selling Joe Biden’s daughter’s diary four years ago to the conservative group Project Veritas. Aimee Harris was sentenced in Manhattan federal court by Laura Taylor Swain, the judge who called the Palm Beach, Florida, woman’s actions “despicable”.

Harris pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in August 2022, admitting that she received $20,000 of the $40,000 that was paid by Project Veritas for personal items belonging to the president’s daughter, Ashley Biden. Project Veritas, founded in 2010, identifies itself as a news organization. It is best known for conducting hidden-camera stings that have embarrassed news outlets, labor organizations and Democratic politicians.

A tearful Harris apologized for enabling Ashley Biden’s private writings to be sold after she found the diary and other items at a friend’s Delray Beach, Florida, home in 2020, where prosecutors said Ashley Biden believed her items were safely stored after she temporarily stayed there in spring 2020.

“I do not believe I am above the law,” Harris said after a prosecutor urged a prison sentence following her failure to appear at numerous sentencing dates on the grounds that she was consumed with caring for her two children, ages eight and six. “I’m a survivor of long-term domestic abuse and sexual trauma,” she told the judge.

It suspended operations last year, so stealing the diary was all for nothing.

at the right time. Was she required to back up her claims of abuse and trauma or was it a matter of just saying it and seeing if it goes over?

As if there are no people who've had a hard life and have small kids who don't commit crimes.

She sold it to Project Veritas for $40,000. Split that with her partnet 50-50. But wouldnt even $20,000 be enough for a grand theft charge? And wouldn't that carry a longer sentence?

16. Yes, since it's over $20,000 it's Grand Theft of the 2nd Degree, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 15 years.

She should be jailed until reichwing propagandists no longer use the information stolen from the diary.

funny, I really don't have any *u*ks to give for stealing something like this -- and then selling to the worst kind of vermin. This is a travesty of a sentence. Damn, we women better kick these R's butts in this election all over the country. We're in really bad shape if we don't. I hate to do a comparison to Afghanistan, but that's what we'll be... prisoners in our country.

The person doing the hiring is the murderer, ultimately. The veritas assholes who paid her should have done ten times her sentence.

Her getting only a month in jail is pretty ridiculous.

No. They’re best known for their misleading, heavily edited propaganda videos, and also for spreading conspiracy theories.

It seems the widely circulated page where Ashley says Joe showered with her is fake. It does not appear in the alleged diary PDF.
