Mayorkas impeachment proceedings pushed to next week: Speaker Johnson

Source: ABC News

Speaker Mike Johnson's office said Tuesday that it will delay the transmission of two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas -- pushing the process' start until next week.

Johnson had said he would send the articles of impeachment to the Senate on Wednesday, which would immediately trigger the Senate's next moves on Thursday. A full-scale trial on the Senate floor is not likely, according to senators and leadership aides -- despite what many House Republicans want.

"To ensure the Senate has adequate time to perform its constitutional duty, the House will transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate next week," Taylor Haulsee, a spokesman for Johnson, said in a statement. "There is no reason whatsoever for the Senate to abdicate its responsibility to hold an impeachment trial."

The House voted to impeach Mayorkas on Feb. 13 by a vote of 214-213 over what Republicans claimed was his failure to enforce border laws amid a "crisis" of high illegal immigration, allegations the secretary denied as "baseless." DHS has criticized the impeachment efforts.

Meanwhile, how about dealing with that backlog of House measures.

Oh wait, I forgot. We are talking about GOPper House twits. They can barely tie their own shoes, much less do anything more complicated.

He's about to be roasted from both sides and he is hanging on by a thread so he's hanging on to any possible piece of bargaining power he has.

I'm not really sure what he can do with it since I assume by law he has to send them to the senate but there probably is an angle he think he can use.

But before the Senate decides to do that, there IS a requirement for them to call the entire Senate into session to "Receive" the Articles and listen to the (fake) Impeachment Managers lay out their case. This would mean they have to put together a cheap dog and pony show that will be broadcast (at least on CSPAN2) all while jury selection commences for the 45 NY criminal fraud case.
