U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert underwent surgery Tuesday after a blood clot was found in her leg, and she has been diagnosed with a vascular condition, her campaign said Tuesday night.
The acute blood clot was found during a CT scan following swelling in her upper left leg, her campaign said in a statement.
Boebert, R-Colo., said that it wont affect her ability to do her job as a member of Congress and that she is expected to make a full recovery. Boebert was diagnosed with May-Thurner Syndrome, which is a vascular condition that can cause blood clots.
Im looking forward to making a full recovery and getting back to Congress to continue fighting for Colorado, she said in a statement.

Heard this on the radio earlier this morning but only caught part of the story - just recall hearing her name and something about a blood clot but didn't connect.

(23,155 posts)I hope Lauren continues to enjoy extended hospital stays and long successful recoveries as she spends more and more time with family and takes all the time she needs to recover from this clearly painful and disabling condition that will obviously be keeping her far from Washington for the foreseeable future. We will all understand if she decides, most sensibly, to resign from her position to spend time focusing on whats important in life, and not being distracted by petty meaningless hateful divisive politics.

(1,586 posts)there was no risk of that clot making its way to her heart or brain.

(23,155 posts)Absolutely no concern in her case. Frightfully tiny target.

(5,127 posts)People without health insurance often hesitate to seek help, leading to devastating consequences. But will this let Boobert see the big picture? I doubt it.

(2,674 posts)Anyone having experienced a blood clot in the leg can increase the risk of future clotting events. Some individuals may be prone to developing recurrent blood clots, a condition known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
To minimize the risk of future problems, individuals who have undergone surgery for a blood clot in the leg are often prescribed anticoagulant medications (such as warfarin or direct oral anticoagulants) to prevent clot formation and manage the underlying condition. Additionally, lifestyle modifications, such as maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, avoiding prolonged periods of immobility, and managing any underlying medical conditions, may be recommended.
If she's taking Warfarin, expect to see more bruising. Wearing extra tight "push up" bras while taking blood thinners can potentially increase the risk of bruising or other issues. Blood thinners, also known as anticoagulant medications, work by interfering with the blood's clotting mechanism, making it take longer for blood to clot. This is beneficial for individuals who are at risk of developing blood clots, as it helps prevent clots from forming or growing larger.
However, the downside of blood thinners is that they can increase the likelihood of bleeding or bruising, even from minor injuries or pressure. Tight clothing, including tight bras, can potentially exert significant pressure on the body, especially in areas where the fabric is constricting. This pressure can lead to localized bruising or skin irritation, particularly in individuals taking blood thinners.
Also, I expect that we'll see less of her wearing those night-club CFM pumps on the House Floor. Wearing high heels can alter the mechanics and movement patterns of the lower leg and foot. It can limit the range of motion of the ankle joint and decrease the activation of calf muscles, which play a crucial role in pumping blood back up towards the heart. Reduced calf muscle activity can impede venous blood flow and potentially contribute to the development of blood clots.
High-heeled shoes often compress the toes and forefoot, which can potentially restrict blood flow to the feet. This compression may lead to decreased circulation, particularly in the smaller blood vessels, and potentially contribute to venous stasis (blood pooling) in the lower limbs.

(13,551 posts)had blood clots in her late 50s. Very frightening. Five years ago in her late eighties my dad called and said something was wrong with her. Went over and she said it hurt to take a deep breath. I figured it was blood clots in her lungs and it was, but they also found them in her legs. It was frightening. After that it seems her dementia got worse.

(32,093 posts)I never took warfarin and don't know how common that is today.
I have lived a normal life since clotting and I've been able to do a lot of physical things (I was previously a marathon runner) - but I draw the line at things like zip-lining.
Also as a former athlete I was never much into wearing heels - I can deal with platform or wedge shoes if I must dress up (or the big clunky heals - they are just a lot more comfortable). One thing I did for ages was set an alarm on my fitbit to buzz each hour so I'd remember to get up and walk around. When I sit I also like to put my feet up on a hassock or small stool so my knees aren't so sharply bent for any length of time (I have scar tissue behind both knees from multiple dvt's).
Flying is probably her biggest risk with May Turner & now a history of having had a clot, so she'll wear compression socks/hose when flying, take her meds, and drink a lot of water prior and while on the flight.

(1,543 posts)Very dangerous, Clot forms in leg, causing swelling and pain that can be mild, redness in leg . GO TO ER IMMEDIATELY because the clot can break loose, travel through circulatory system to brain where it can cause stroke, sometimes fatal.

(32,093 posts)and Lauren should thank her lucky stars she is covered as a congresswoman. Hillary Clinton has had at least one clot also, with all the flying it's really not a surprise. That is one way to get them, along with genetic conditions like Lauren has, or birth control (which was my unlucky draw).
I like to educate about clots because a lot of folks know nothing about them. But I also like to educate about insurance. We should all have it - and it should be single payer as opposed to conditioned on employment.
My advocacy for today.
