At least 7 shot, all under age 17, in mass shooting near Indianapolis mall

Source: NBC News via AOL

Seven children were injured in a shooting outside a mall in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday night, police said.

Indianapolis police officers were on patrol when they heard gunshots just after 11:30 p.m. and arrived on a block outside Circle Centre Mall. According to police, officers saw six people injured with gunshot wounds.

All of the victims were ages 12 to 17, police said.

Emergency medical services took the children to hospitals, and a seventh person, also under 18, arrived at a hospital on their own. One victim was in critical condition, and the six others were stable.

Movie?

I know the shooting is the story here, but really, 12 year olds out late at night in winter?

Not right.

at first, I thought perhaps it was an easter egg hunt, since they were all kids... but then I read the time, and that didn't make sense. Damn... I'm so sick of the R's allowing everyone to arm themselves and go crazy in preparation for their dear, sacred civil war.

Sure shootings can happen anytime but I feel like it's higher risk at that time of night.

I'm from Baltimore (or very nearby). And barely in elementary school when the PSAs started to run.

For years later I'd parody it as, "It's 9 pm, do you know where your wombats are?" After moving far, far away from Baltimore I quickly realized nobody had a clue what I was parodying.

getting shot.

Its insane what is happening in this country, and when the buffoon loses the elections the violence is going to escalate, the inside terrorism in the USA has grown thanks to the buffoon, and of course the NRA, we must also give credit to republicans as culprits of this madness. The courts must imprison the SOB, enough is enough.

Even as a liberal parent I never let my 12 year old kids be out unsupervised at that time of night.

Now if a movie just got out and they were waiting to be picked up, what's another story. But I wouldn't let them be out with their friends roaming the streets at that time of night.

Not at that age. Even if gun or gang violence were not a thing.

It of course has nothing to do with them being able to do it and be perfectly safe. They should be safe no matter what they do. Even if they do something stupid.

The penalty for stupidity shouldn't be getting shot.

USA has a gun problem.

They're the lame generation. Really pos music, movies and then dealing with gun violence.

Even if the mall closed at 7, cinemas often have an exterior entrance so they can run separately. Movies that start at 8-9pm would let out around 11 - runtime + 20 minutes of previews. Potentially the 12 year olds chaperoned by the older 17 year olds, possibly waiting for a bus or pickup by the mall exits.

I found this report on the local ABC affiliate: https://www.wrtv.com/news/local-news/crime/multiple-shot-near-circle-centre-mall-downtown

From what I can see in the video, this area isn't a shopping mall in the sense of a suburban mall. It's a section of downtown Indianapolis where several stores and restaurants are located in a central area. Maybe a movie theater or something that might attract young people? I don't know. But everything closes at 7 p.m. - so what are these kids doing out that late? Apparently the cops have no clues who did the shooting.

IMPD: 7 shot between the ages of 12-17 in downtown Indy

{snip}

The article at the AOL aggregation site is an update of an existing article it pulled from NBC. It corrects a misstatement made in the NBC article about an Indianapolis shooting on March 24.

CORRECTION (April 1, 2024, 10:41 a.m. ET): A previous version of this article misstated the conditions of the five people shot on March 24. They were injured, not killed.

It was a Saturday night, spring break, University campus not far away, lots of hotels and restaurants nearby. There are always kids on scooters and walking in the area in the evening.

It's amazing no one died.

But come on. It's obviously dangerous to be out at night. Even for older teenagers.

... even in the daytime. But 11 o'clock at night? No way!

For all we know it was another teenager (one of their friends) who did the shooting. But even if it was some oddball stranger, shame on these parents for not supervising their children. Shame on these parents for not looking out for their kids' safety.

Lots of kids go to the 9 PM showing of movies. That would be the most logical reason why so many kids would be out that late. Saturday 9-11 PM is a very busy time according to Google

Not OK to carry a gun and shoot 7 people because someone "disrespected" you.

Too many teens running around with stolen handguns and too many dipshit handgun owners getting them stolen.
