Maryland Governor Doesn't Have 'Time' For GOP's 'DEI' Bridge Collapse Talk

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) dismissed talk from Republicans who have blamed the deadly Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts.
Moore, in a CNN interview Sunday, reacted to conservatives who have used DEI to criticize Black officials such as Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Maryland port commissioner Karenthia A. Barber after the collapse killed two construction workers while four others remain missing and are presumed dead.
My response is I have no time for foolishness, Moore told CNNs Dana Bash when asked about the attacks on State of the Union. Workers have started removing parts of the downed bridge as a salvage operations are underway at the site of the collapse.
There is no timeline for the recovery of the four missing people due to how complex this operation is, the governor told NPR on Sunday. Bash pointed to Scotts remarks that critics used the term DEI because they dont have the courage to say the N-word before asking Moore if the attacks are racist.

but expected. Repubs can't do $hi7 but bitch and attack. And project.
It won't take much to clear the channel - maybe by crane or using a tug to drag the pieces out of the way. Once the the ship is moved, river traffic should return to near normal. Rebuilding the bridge could be done prefab - build the sections off site, then float and crane them into place. The original construction was beautiful but really vulnerable - maybe it should be rebuilt like the New Orleans MS river bridge, with stronger foundations and collision deflectors..

(24,437 posts)It seems like now with something happens now with anything corporate or organizational, the new culprit is DEI, which seems to have evolved from CRT, the last big right-wing obsession. They don't want Trans people to have jobs either, given how they recently treated a Trans employee at an Alabama Space Camp.

None of these people are actual journalists. They are sensationalist gossip-mongers and it's all for publicity.
And people wonder why political discourse has stooped so low? This is obviously what media thinks we want. Don't watch it. It isn't news. Read your news instead. I'd love to put all of cable "news" out of business. I can't watch CNN or msnbc and it goes without saying Fox. None of it is real news. It's sensationalist gossip-mongering and the outrage du jour.
At any rate, the mayor handled it perfectly. Who has time for that nonsense?

(129,469 posts)and think I see where they could do it, particularly if can remove the still-standing part of the road bed and its pillars/pylons, ahead of the fallen bridge, I.e., the suspended road to the right of the collapse. -
Only thing is that I had noticed some high-tension/high-voltage electric power lines that extended out into the water on platforms from the land and they appear to go all the way across the waterway ahead of the bridge, so the width of how much of the suspended road that could be removed for a temporary channel, would probably need to take those into account.

(12,602 posts)Maybe its possible to unload large ships to smaller ones to move in to the actual docks; but thats probably too costly
Thats a great shot to show the full scope of what has to be done.

(129,469 posts)The initial "temporary channel(s) " were aimed primarily for "support" vessels to be able to assist in the salvage operation.
Gotta see if I can find that article again, but they mentioned that one channel would be for vessels that can traverse a channel with a depth of 15ft (which is very limited) and then later they will try to open another up for those that can traverse a waterway with a depth of 20ft (which would allow some bigger tugs through).
Anything beyond that is not going to be ready.
I know that the deeper channel ports are usually a minimum 40ft and I think this one is at least 50ft - 60ft deep. The article mentioned that due to the bridge structure being collapsed on the front of the ship, the ship's bow is literally resting on the bottom of the channel at the moment.
ETA - I had this OP early this morning - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143218664 and that had a link to a joint press release that mentioned one particular channel - https://mayor.baltimorecity.gov/news/press-releases/2024-03-31-second-march-31st-update-key-bridge-response-unified-command

BALTIMORE The Captain of the Port (COTP) is preparing to establish a temporary alternate channel on the northeast side of the main channel in the vicinity of the Francis Scott Key Bridge for commercially essential vessels.
This will mark an important first step along the road to reopening the port of Baltimore, said Capt. David OConnell, Federal On-Scene Coordinator, Key Bridge Response 2024. By opening this alternate route, we will support the flow of marine traffic into Baltimore.
This action is part of a phased approach to opening the main channel. The temporary channel will be marked with government lighted aids to navigation and will have a controlling depth of 11 feet, a 264-foot horizontal clearance, and vertical clearance 96 feet.
The current 2,000-yard safety zone around the Francis Scott Key Bridge remains in effect and is intended to protect personnel, vessels, and the marine environment. No vessel or person will be permitted to enter the safety zone without obtaining permission from the COTP or a designated representative.
(snip)
This describes the initial shallow channel (the article I saw had mentioned others as a phase in).

(6,661 posts)Unless DEI was piloting the ship when it went out of control & hit the bridge, a physical impossibility, DEI has nothing to do with this. How stupid do they think people are? I know, rhetorical question.

help for those impacted by the bridge, respect for the repair crew that was on the bridge,
and other grown up things over the weekend and they were wonderful. Those who use
this tragedy to push their racist agenda and anybody who supports that crap are beyond
help. Btw werent people of color the ones killed?
DEI is just made up dog whistles like woke, CRT, flag burning, or trans people using the
restroom they want. We will never have the votes of those who push or follow DEI fuck
