A judge on Tuesday imposed a limited gag order on Donald Trump ahead of his upcoming criminal hush money trial in New York. Trump must refrain from making public statements about likely witnesses and jurors in the case, Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan said in a court order.
Trump is also barred from speaking about lawyers in the case, court staff, employees in the Manhattan District Attorneys office and their family members if those statements are made with the intent to materially interfere with the case, the judge ruled.
Merchans order still allows Trump to speak out about Alvin Bragg, the D.A. prosecuting the former president on charges of falsifying business records to conceal a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.
The gag order does not specifically bar Trump from criticizing the judge. The decision, which granted a Feb. 22 request by Bragg to restrict Trumps speech about the case, came hours after Trump tore into the judge as a Trump Hater on social media.

So he's been given the all-clear to aim his rabid followers at Bragg. Thanks, judge - are you supplying him with protection out of your own pocket?

(129,012 posts)For the election interference case - Chutkan had imposed a limited gag order but then briefly lifted it. Then she reimposed it and an appeals court paused it, but then finally allowed most of it.
The ultimate defiance in a parallel case happened with Sam Bankman-Fried with his refusal to heed the witness tampering allegations and that lead to, after 6 months of escalating actions (first limiting and then removing his computer and internet access, etc), his jailing until his trial (where he was found guilty).

(129,012 posts)although he hadn't yet gone as far as Bankman-Fried did. But note that the only "trials" that he has had so far were civil and his presence was "voluntary".
For criminal trials, he HAS to be there.

(47,081 posts)Maybe they will do that.
But of course friendly appeal courts might knock down the fine.
Yes Trump has to show up for the criminal case.
Unless the judge lets him off the hook.
Or Trump appeals that requirement.
We are learning way more than we want to about criminal law and
courtroom procedure.

(129,012 posts)I use the Bankman-Fried case as an example of the "patience" before the hammer falls - https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/11/us-judge-sends-sam-bankman-fried-to-jail-over-witness-tampering.html

(47,081 posts)We know Trump may try to do the same.
Or rather send one of his flying monkeys to commit the crime.
Trump is too smart to do it himself of course.
We shall see how this unfolds.
Can Trump keep his mouth shut.
I doubt it.
