WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) President Joe Biden on Saturday signed a $1.2 trillion package of spending bills after Congress had passed the long overdue legislation just hours earlier, ending the threat of a partial government shutdown.
This agreement represents a compromise, which means neither side got everything it wanted, Biden said in a statement. But it rejects extreme cuts from House Republicans and expands access to child care, invests in cancer research, funds mental health and substance use care, advances American leadership abroad, and provides resources to secure the border. ... Thats good news for the American people.
It took lawmakers six months into the current budget year to get near the finish line on government funding, the process slowed by conservatives who pushed for more policy mandates and steeper spending cuts than a Democratic-led Senate or White House would consider. The impasse required several short-term spending bills to keep agencies funded.
The White House said Biden signed the legislation at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, where he was spending the weekend. It had cleared the Senate by a 74-24 vote shortly after funding had expired for the agencies at midnight. But the White House had sent out a notice shortly after the deadline announcing that the Office of Management and Budget had ceased shutdown preparations because there was a high degree of confidence that Congress would pass the legislation and the Democratic president would sign it Saturday.

(9,247 posts)I hope Biden/Harris campaign is prepared to SLAM their asses with another looming one just before the election because they won't stop this shit until their asses are kicked to the curb and out of the galaxy by voters who are sick of it - and I'm not holding breath waiting for that because there are too many ignorant MAGAt voters out there. So it's on Democrats to scream it to the rooftops 24 x 7 x 365 all day every day every time it happens so people know whose damn fault it is. And it's not "Congress" as the stinking media loves to say: IT'S THE DAMN REPUBLICANS in Congress. And ONLY them.

They are the ones that will drive a car headfirst into a tree and then whine "Hey man, I told ya, the steering on this thing sucks. We should have just taken a cab or something."
That's real bright. Another budget fight weeks before the next fiscal budget is due on October 1. Quickly followed by an election, odds not on their side.

Statement from President Joe Biden on the Bipartisan Government Funding Bill
HOME
BRIEFING ROOM
STATEMENTS AND RELEASES
The bipartisan funding bill I just signed keeps the government open, invests in the American people, and strengthens our economy and national security. This agreement represents a compromise, which means neither side got everything it wanted. But it rejects extreme cuts from House Republicans and expands access to child care, invests in cancer research, funds mental health and substance use care, advances American leadership abroad, and provides resources to secure the border that my Administration successfully fought to include. Thats good news for the American people.
But I want to be clear: Congresss work isnt finished. The House must pass the bipartisan national security supplemental to advance our national security interests. And Congress must pass the bipartisan border security agreementthe toughest and fairest reforms in decadesto ensure we have the policies and funding needed to secure the border. Its time to get this done.
