U.S. lawmakers head for holidays, leaving Ukraine in lurch

Source: Raw Story- Agence France-Presse

The US Congress heads out on a two-week break this weekend with no clear plan to provide desperately needed military aid requested by the White House to help pro-Western Ukraine in its fight against Russian invasion.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that his country is in dire need of support to replenish dwindling ammunition stocks, and has voiced hope the United States will approve a $95 billion package stalled on Capitol Hill.

But Mike Johnson, an ally of Donald Trump who leads a razor-thin Republican majority in the House of Representatives, has resisted pressure to allow a vote on the legislation, which would also provide support for Israel and Taiwan.

The Senate sent the House its $95 billion aid package, backed by nearly half of Republicans, more than a month ago, but the party's House members have soured on Ukraine in recent months.

Republican defense hawks have been locking horns with isolationist Trump followers who say Americans should be more concerned with domestic issues such as mounting national debt than getting involved in foreign conflicts..............................................................................

meaning they will be around today, tomorrow and into the weekend (and the Senate would still need to vote on it too). The C.R. expires Friday at midnight and they expect there might be a short lapse after that while they finish votes in both chambers (although they sometimes invoke a "Stop the Clock" rule which gives them that brief little time to finish stuff up over a weekend).

I think they should be paid by the hour. Although they'd make sure they had a high hourly wage, I'd lay odds we'd save money in the long run. Plus, we could gear it to a process similar to what the "ordinary" people have to follow. Scale it to match ours or something. I know it would take an amendment to get it done, but that's one amendment I'd bet would pass the 2/3 of the states! People are getting sick and tired of "do nothing" congresses!

This is how they govern. Nothing changes unless the voters decide they’ve had enough

For as much good as they've accomplished so far this term, they might as well take the remainder of it off.

"Rep. Ken Buck (Colo.) became the first GOP member to sign the House Democrats’ aid discharge position on Thursday, just one day before he is set to retire from Congress.

The discharge petition, formally launched earlier this month by House Democrats, is an attempt to force consideration of a Senate-passed $95 million foreign aid package, which includes $60 billion in aid for Ukraine."
