House Speaker Mike Johnson considering inviting Israel PM Netanyahu to address Congress

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is considering inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., delivered a scathing speech criticizing Netanyahu last week.

“It’s one of the things that we have in mind and we may try to arrange for that,” Johnson told reporters Wednesday. “I think it’s very important for us to show solidarity and support with Israel right now in their time of great struggle and we certainly stand for that position and we’ll try to advance that in any way we can.”

Johnson also said at the House GOP leadership’s weekly news conference that he had a “lengthy conversation” over the phone with Netanyahu on Wednesday morning. Axios was first to report House Republicans were weighing inviting Netanyahu to Capitol Hill.

Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish U.S. official, blasted Netanyahu last week on the Senate floor, calling for Israelis to hold new elections to replace Netanyahu, saying the prime minister “no longer fits the needs of Israel after October 7” and is “an obstacle to peace.”

If he supports Israel, he alienates Muslims and now a bunch of other minorities (because the Russia-backed protesters have made this all about "colonizers" and "white people".). If he comes down too hard on Israel, he will alienate the Jewish vote.
It's a "no win" situation

4. So tired of the "we love Israel" act among these far RW Xians--whose sole interest in Israel & Israelis

is to have the story of "End Times" come true (which doesn't bode well for many non-Jesus-loving Jews but is the ultimate "reward" for these RW fundy "Xians." )

Many or most Israeli Jews (and certainly many/most American Jews) know this history and "belief" driving RW in the US. Yet, nothing is said and the RW continues to claim to be the ultimate "protectors" of Israel. I've always found that cynical exploitation to be pretty creepy.

8. You are correct, sir. Instead of inviting warmonger Netanyahu, how about the Israeli opposition leader?

9. It's been done before. Bibi met with our congress without consulting Obama in 2015.

Netanyahu was invited to address Congress by House Speaker John Boehner, in a move that didn't include Democrats. The plan has also rankled the Obama administration because it breaks with a U.S. policy of not hosting foreign leaders who are about to face an election.

"The move has created bad blood between Netanyahu and Obama, and relations between the two countries have suffered,"

Nor one whose country needs and expects U.S. aid. And now he's done it twice.
