Appeals court to hear oral arguments over Texas immigration law

Source: NBC News

March 20, 2024, 10:03 AM EDT

Judges on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments Wednesday in a case challenging a new immigration law in Texas that would allow police to arrest migrants who illegally cross into the U.S. from Mexico.

The case will be heard at 10 a.m. CT by Chief Judge Priscilla Richman and Judges Andrew S. Oldham and Irma Carrillo Ramirez. Richman was appointed by George W. Bush, and Oldham by Donald Trump, while Ramirez was appointed by President Joe Biden.

In a brief order late Tuesday night, the three-judge panel ruled 2-1 that the measure, known as Senate Bill 4, should be temporarily blocked while the judges hear the case. Richman and Ramirez voted to block the law, while Oldham voted for it to remain in effect.

Earlier Tuesday, the Supreme Court said that it could take effect.

Good for Mexico. Who can blame them? I don't. flying_wahini Mar 20 #3
The immigrants could be asylum seekers. They come in groups. Dressed in rags etc. LeftInTX Mar 20 #4
Oh they are, but aren't any paths to immigration here. flying_wahini Mar 20 #5

Gov HotWheels says often how they are “bleeding Texas dry”.
If he has them arrested then he has to house and feed them. Not only that, are you going to ask for papers for every Hispanic in Texas? Gonna cause some problems.

Until Abbott gets it through his thick skull that they are here to stay and it would be cheaper to put them ‘in the system’ and issue IDs then they will continue. It’s the computer age, get with a program, any program. Pick one.
I live in Fort Worth and it looks like little Mexico in some of our stores. I was one of 2 white people in a Ross for Less and a handful of employees that were from here. There were 50 people in line and the clerks didn’t speak English. Some families are dressed in rags, fearful and can’t speak English. It’s pitiful and is just perpetuating the pain. People are fleeing for their lives. I’ve been saying for decades-
If they wanna fix immigration then fine the business owners that hire them. (Never gonna happen)
They build our roads and schools. Work in restaurants and stores, Mow lawns (and they are Skilled workers). It’s heartbreaking to see them so at the mercy of some people. They need to get a handle on it.
DO SOMETHING instead of nothing. People are suffering. It’s terrible.

It's an annual "show".

Last evening, Mexico told TX they will NOT accept any people deported by that state unless they are Mexican citizens (and most are NOT).

Why the press isn’t doing daily interviews with these folks to show where and WHY they are headed here is just bad politics.
If you can’t change their tiny MAGA brains then we have to find another way.
So many are blue collar professionals with their families who can’t get in any other way and escaping from despot leaders and governments that Trump has supported. Of course there are lots of white collared professionals, too.
I think the best way is to card them with an ID and they have to keep it on them and report every 6 months. If arrested without their ID THEN do something about it. Get them in the system as immigrants.
It’s not rocket science. It’s cheaper to keep them and better for everyone.

“Get in line” they say. See you in about 3 to 6 years if you’re lucky. That’s just for the ones who got registered at the start. (Rare) if you aren’t in the system within a couple of years you never will be.
It’s a permanent and perpetuating slave system.
