PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — The father of a Michigan school shooter was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter Thursday, a second conviction against the teen’s parents who were accused of failing to secure a gun at home and doing nothing to address acute signs of his mental turmoil.

The jury verdict means James Crumbley has joined Jennifer Crumbley as a cause of the killing of four students at Oxford High School in 2021, even without pulling the trigger.

They had separate trials as the first U.S. parents to be charged in a mass school shooting committed by their child. Jennifer Crumbley was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in February.

The verdicts — one each for the four victims — were read around 7:15 p.m. at the end of a full day of deliberations.

Were they hoping he'd shoot himself? I don't understand that at all.

who knew their kid had a drinking problem, had smashed up cars etc. and they kept buying them Corvettes. I've known parents who had kids they didn't want and repeatedly failed to get them proper health care for injuries/illnesses etc. some of them life-threatening. I knew one small boy whose parent tried to make him climb the outside ladder of a tall farm silo in order to "cure him" of being afraid of heights. When the boy got part way up and froze the parent had to climb and bring the boy down. Once on the ground the parent berated the child as a "coward". I knew a family whose father used to make the kids watch as he "taught the mother" for displeasing him.

Neglect. Abuse. When some people say they "love their kids" it's really not love as we normally think of the word.

seeking assistance for dysfunctional family dynamics but no responsibility for that same dysfunction had given depressed son #2 the gun with which troubled #1 son had committed suicide, IIRC. [

to protect themselves against their son.

Minor children can be put into treatment by their parents. One wonders why they didn't choose to do so. Instead, 4 people are dead and 7 were injured and their son is in prison for life, no parole.

They'll have ample time to wrestle with that during their own sentences.

land in prison if you allow your kid access to weapons. I always wonder why people who clearly don't give 2 shits for their kid ever had one.

Both parents have been found guilty. It's long past time parents who buy their kids guns be held responsible when the kid uses it to kill.
