Trump posts $91M bond as he appeals E. Jean Carroll defamation verdict
Source: The Hill
Former President Trump posted a roughly $91 million bond on Friday as he appeals the verdict in advice columnist E. Jean Carrolls defamation lawsuit.
Trump had aimed to delay posting the bond or reduce the amount as he seeks a new trial and otherwise continues fighting the recent verdict.
But after U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan rejected Trumps latest request to delay a Monday deadline, the former president on Friday formally filed his appeal and posted the full $91.63 million bond.
President Trump respectfully requests that this Court recognize the supersedeas bond obtained by President Trump in the sum of $91,630,000.00 and approve it as adequate and sufficient to stay the enforcement of the Judgment, to the extent that the Judgment awards damages, pending the ultimate disposition of President Trumps appeal, Trump attorney Alina Habba wrote in court filings.

(94,728 posts)Insurance company Chubb underwrote the bond for Trump, which the former president signed on Tuesday. Under the terms of the bond, Chubb will only secure the appeal of the $83.3 million judgment, not any future appeals.

(17,030 posts)Carroll WILL get the money the bond company posted, IF TFG loses his appeal? Then the bond company goes after TFG for their money?

(35,731 posts)a premium company, or so I was told when I took out my house insurance from them. I probably pay a little more, but I don't run into problems with them when I file a claim, which is hardly ever.
But that was years ago. Maybe things have changed.
As usual, there is a lot of informed commentary that doesnt make sense.
Your attention to details and facts is appreciated.

(35,731 posts)I would have liked to see the furniture movers getting his "stuff" out of trump tower.
Eventually, the sheriff on the street, securing the locks.
Supposedly the Maralago quarters are very small, so he'd have to find a place for all his gold-trimmed furniture.

Trumps empire of debt is going to dissolve.

(35,731 posts)will not legalize the issue. If it is looked at as a campaign contribution, there are limits to how much he can give.
They can call it a personal gift and get the election laws out of the picture.
Bonding company gets an amount--about 4%. He has to give an irrevocable letter of credit and they'll take a pledge of assets. They will charge him 12-15% interest. The costs on this whole process are very high, especially at this level of $$.
If he doesn't pay, the letter of credit has title to the properties and they'll dissolve it.
The monitor, Barbara Jones, will know where he got the money. She will make a report to Judge Engoron and that's how we'll know who financed him.

And I'm appalled that GoFundMe has not removed the account, as it is a violation of their TOS and several people have already pointed this out to them.

(42,759 posts)He didn't need very much money to secure an appeal bond. He will have put up collateral, which could include real estate or a letter of credit from a bank.

malthaussen
(17,216 posts)First, how would she have accurate knowledge of DJT's assets? She can only know by hearsay. So she was repeating what she has heard. That's not lying, but it doesn't preclude being mistaken.

(17,030 posts)Isn't this proof they lied when they told the judge they can't come up with the money? I DO NOT trust these people at all. One more thing, does interest continue on the money still?
