Ronny Jackson, the former White House physician turned GOP congressman, regularly touts his military bona fides. ... "As a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral with nearly three decades of military service I understand the commitment and sacrifices made by servicemen and servicewomen to serve our country," the two-term Texas representative writes on his congressional website, posted to a page listing his work on veterans issues. {1}
But Jackson is no longer a retired admiral. The Navy demoted him in July 2022 following a damaging Pentagon inspector general's report that substantiated allegations about his inappropriate behavior as a White House physician, a previously unreported decision confirmed by a current defense official and a former U.S. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive personnel move. {2} ... Jackson is now a retired Navy captain, those people said -- a demotion that carries significant financial burden in addition to the social stigma of stripped rank in military circles.
Despite the demotion, Jackson has continued to refer to himself as a retired rear admiral, including in statements released since the Navy reclassified him as a retired captain. Former president Donald Trump and other Republicans have also continued to publicly describe Jackson using his former rank; it's unclear if they were aware of his demotion.
Jackson's office did not respond to requests for comment about the Navy's 2022 personnel action and his demotion.

It looks as if this happened two years ago, but the news is just now getting out.
It's as if he's trying to hide something .

(15,923 posts)Appointed to that. Even a captains mast would have gotten at least a sentence in some newspaper like the navy times at least.

(10,202 posts)According to the link:
"Military guidelines allow a provisional retirement rank if an officer is under investigation for misconduct at the time, as Jackson was during his departure from the Navy. Military officials have the option to downgrade the final rank if adverse findings are made, busting down an officer to the last grade they satisfactorily served."
This is different from frocking and a regular provisional rank. Frocking is a higher rank given with the expectation that the officer will attain that rank in a short time period.
A provisional rank is a temporary rank used for the billet or job the officer is holding. Like if the Captain of a ship dies, the XO will be given a provisional rank of Captain until a replacement can be found.
It sounds like this is a special case used for retiring officers.
As a Naval Officer, I was always told that I served at the pleasure of the president. Maybe Biden was not pleased.
But the Stinking Nazi sure loved all those free flowing drugs for everyone in the white house. I wonder if Trump and his staff were having orgies with underaged girls in the white House too.

The simple answer is that downgrade to lower rank due to adverse findings is based on being investigated at retirement date, not date the rank was appointed. It does not matter when he got the appointment. It matters if he was being investigated at the time of retirement.
He did not complete Rear Admiral successfully because of adverse findings of an investigation started before his retirement date as a Rear Admiral.
That's to keep officers who have a lot of power from doing corrupt acts then escaping investigation or reprimands by submitting retirement requests.

In Europe, they'll tell you: "It's the gentle, creative side of America we wish we saw more of."
In Latin America, they'll say: "It's the sound of what we wish we were more like ourselves."
(and in Asia, they say: "Karaoke!!" )
If they knew most kids these days, and for some time now, have mostly been into rap and metal.

(1,145 posts)they won't care. It includes the county where the Koch brothers' grandfather ran a newspaper. It has a Cook Partisan rating of 26. It was the district which had the lowest vote for Obama in 2008 and second lowest for Hillary. If voters there hear about Jackson's demotion they will dismiss it as political first, and then just ignore the facts if they are pressed.

(32,065 posts)Or when you claim a high medal that you never earned. Jackson was an Admiral. He was promoted to that position by Obama. I don't know if he still claims to be an Admiral but if he does he should not be doing it. But it is not stolen valor.

(6,844 posts)I'll put that on the long list of things that must be undone as soon as possible.
Started this list in the late 60's and have checked off very few items even as several of those have had to be relisted. It's like history is a one-off original until it's forgotten or reinterpreted. Then it sneaks out to repeat itself. That's where the generational value and reality of death makes itself unobviously, perhaps even perversely, useful. Propelling the species onward through the ages in clouds of star dust and mold.
