Middle East Crisis U.N. Inquiry Finds Evidence of Sexual Assault in Hamas-Led Attack on Israel

A United Nations report released on Monday said that it had found grounds to believe that sexual violence occurred against women during the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack on Israel and evidence that hostages being held in the Gaza Strip were also assaulted. It called for a full investigation.
The report issued by the U.N. Secretary Generals special envoy on sexual violence in conflict came in response to multiple accounts of sexual violence during the Oct. 7 attack, as well as allegations by Palestinian officials that Palestinian women in detention and in the West Bank had been assaulted. The report asked that Israel grant access to U.N. officials to conduct thorough investigations of the Palestinian accounts.
Vice President Kamala Harris was scheduled to meet with a top Israeli war cabinet official at the White House on Monday, a day after she amplified the United Statess calls for Hamas to sign off on a deal that would allow for a temporary cease-fire and more aid deliveries in the Gaza Strip.
During the meeting with Benny Gantz, Ms. Harris is expected to emphasize the urgency of securing a hostage deal and reducing the humanitarian crisis that has unfolded alongside Israels war against Hamas in response to its Oct. 7 attacks, according to a White House official who shared details of her plans on the condition of anonymity.
