McConnell, Thune call for full Senate trial of Mayorkas
Source: The Hill
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and Whip John Thune (S.D.), the two top-ranking Senate Republican leaders, called Tuesday for the Senate to conduct a full trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, which Senate conservatives had demanded.
Thune, who is angling to one day succeed McConnell as GOP leader, demanded Tuesday that the Senate hold a full trial over the impeachment charges passed by the House against Mayorkas.
The House of Representatives has determined that Secretary Mayorkas has committed impeachable offenses. That issue will come before the United States Senate. I believe the Senate needs to hold a trial, Thune announced at the weekly Senate GOP leadership press conference.
Im going to make the argument and Im sure the Democrats will try to dismiss it that we ought to be having a trial, conducting a trial of the United States Senate to determine whether these are impeachable offenses, Thune added.

(738 posts)...is a raging dumpster fire. By going ahead with this trial, Qpublican Senators will show America just how eQually nutz they are. It could only help Dems retain control of the Senate.
Let's also flip Colin Allred for Rafael Cruz.

(2,744 posts)It appears he doesn't believe that Mayorkas's impeachment was proper or that it met the "high crimes and misdemeanors" test. He believes it is the duty of the Senate to go on record about what they consider proper and improper grounds for impeachment.
McConnell was near him and it seemed to me he was there to indicate his support of Thune's position.
I was pleasantly surprised by his reasoning. But in this highly politicized environment I'm not at all sure that the American public will understand that.
