Speaker Mike Johnson can 'bend the course of history' by backing Ukraine funding, White House says

Source: ABC News

President Joe Biden's national security adviser on Sunday pushed Speaker Mike Johnson to put a bipartisan Senate foreign aid bill to a vote in the House, arguing that doing so could help turn the tide in Ukraine's war against Russia's invasion.

"This is one of those instances where one person can bend the course of history. Speaker Johnson, if he put this bill on the floor, would produce a strong bipartisan majority vote in favor of the aid to Ukraine. We saw that in the Senate," Jake Sullivan told ABC News "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz.

"So it comes down to one person, Speaker Johnson. Will he put the bill on the floor? I have spoken with him personally. He has indicated that he would like to get the funding for Ukraine. He's trying to figure out a way to do it. Right now, it comes down to his willingness to actually step up to the plate and discharge his responsibility at this critical moment," Sullivan said. "And history is watching."

Johnson has voiced support for Ukraine but helped lead opposition to the Senate legislation that combined funding for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan with significantly increased border restrictions over criticism that the immigration changes were insufficient.

in terms of political effectiveness. When will we learn?

Not only do the Republicans not care about our lofty ideals, they enjoy nothing more than poking holes in them. Their base demands it. Look at who their leader is (and it ain’t Mike Johnson). You think that guy gives a shit about history?

why people think otherwise. It has plenty of support to do so. And as McHenry points out the Speaker cannot hold it off forever.

Johnson and Trump are joined at the hip. Emmer and Scalise were ditched because Trump couldn’t count on them to ditch Ukraine. Seems clear to me that Mikie got the green light because he pledged fealty to Trump on this one issue, which obsesses him more than any other. The only person he despises more than Zelensky is Biden. And both are mortal enemies of his idol Vlad. I hope you’re right but the only way I see this passing is via a discharge petition.

So maybe the lure of getting a positive blurb in future history will get him to do the right thing.
However, he is a russian tool, and in spite of his religion, I'm sure he cares more about the here and now than he does about his afterlife.

Those that do not support Ukraine are traitors to democracy. Ukraine is a democracy. We are a democracy (currently). Putin is a dictator. Trump wants to be a dictator. These people are a threat to democracy and want to suspend the Constitution at home and abandon our democratic allies abroad. We must oppose dictatorship at home and abroad, and defend democracy here in America and everywhere else in the world. This is a struggle of Democracy versus Dictatorship. Any attempt to suspend our Constitution would be illegal and must be opposed. We must support our allies and democracy around the world. This includes supporting Ukraine.

CNN

“Most Americans oppose Congress authorizing additional funding to support Ukraine in its war with Russia, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, as the public splits over whether the US has already done enough to assist Ukraine.

Overall, 55% say the US Congress should not authorize additional funding to support Ukraine vs. 45% who say Congress should authorize such funding. And 51% say that the US has already done enough to help Ukraine while 48% say it should do more. A poll conducted in the early days of the Russian invasion in late February 2022 found 62% who felt the US should have been doing more.

Partisan divisions have widened since that poll, too, with most Democrats and Republicans now on opposing sides of questions on the US role in Ukraine.“
