WASHINGTON -- WASHINGTON (AP) Jill Biden on Wednesday was announcing $100 million in federal funding for research and development into women's health as part of a new White House initiative that she is heading up.
The funding is the first major deliverable of the White House Initiative on Women's Health Research, which was announced late last year. The money comes from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, or ARPA-H, which is under the federal Department of Health and Human Services.
The first lady was set to announce the ARPA-H Sprint for Women's Health during an appearance Wednesday in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Biden has said women don't know enough about their health because the research historically has been underfunded and lacking. The White House initiative aims to change the approach to and increase funding for women's health research.
We will close the gaps, we will accelerate new ideas, and change womens lives, the first lady will say, according to excerpts of her prepared remarks that were shared with The Associated Press.

(14,923 posts)the important details, and understanding of that have been quite under funded.
Don't you think it's important that women's differences should be brought up to an equal level of understanding as the male normative is?

(11,574 posts)Women's biology has been grossly understudied. This is a giant step in the right direction in moving past the "mail norm" in scientific research.
As an example, I recently read the book, Eve: How The Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution, by Cat Bohannon. In the introduction, the author states that from 1996 to 2006, 79% of the published animal studies in the scientific journal, Pain, excluded women. Prior to 1990, data didn't even exist. Given that women respond differently to anesthesia and pain killers, than men, it would seem logical to research women's biology, as well.
This is a huge step in the right direction. Kudos to Dr. Biden
