Democrat Tom Suozzi wins New York race to succeed George Santos in Congress

Democrat Tom Suozzi won a special election for a U.S. House seat in New York on Tuesday, coming out on top in a politically mixed suburban district in a victory that could lift his partys hopes heading into a fiercely contested presidential election later this year.
Suozzi defeated Republican Mazi Pilip to take the seat that was left vacant when George Santos, also a Republican, was expelled from Congress. The victory marks a return to Washington for Suozzi, who represented the district for three terms before giving it up to run, unsuccessfully, for governor.
Its unclear how long his next stint on Capitol Hill will last, as a redistricting process unfolds that could reshape the district. But for now the result narrows the already slim Republican majority in the House. And it provides Democrats a much-needed win in New York Citys Long Island suburbs, where the GOP showed surprising strength in recent elections.
Pilip conceded the race and said she congratulated Suozzi in a phone call Tuesday night. Yes we lost, but it doesnt mean we are going to end here, Pilip told supporters at her election watch party. Suozzis win will likely reassure Democrats that they can perform well in suburban communities across the nation, which will be critical to the partys efforts to retake control of the U.S. House and reelect President Joe Biden.

Democrat Tom Suozzi won a special election Tuesday in New York for the U.S. House seat that was left vacant when Republican George Santos was expelled from Congress.
Suozzi defeated Republican Mazi Pilip to retake a seat he held for three terms before giving it up to run, unsuccessfully, for governor.
The victory narrows the slim Republican majority in the House and gives Democrats a much-needed win in New York City's Long Island suburbs, where the GOP showed surprising strength in recent elections.
On the campaign trail, Suozzi, a political centrist, leaned into some of the same issues that Republicans have used to bash Democrats, calling for tougher U.S. border policies and a rollback of New York laws that made it tougher for judges to detain criminal suspects awaiting trial.

(51,815 posts)Plus it was a special election, plus it was snowing, both of which aided Republicans. Polls had Suozzi leading by 1 point; looks like he will win by 8 points.

(32,917 posts)It seems that any more the polls exist for only one reason - to discourage Dems from voting.
If we stop reading and listening to pollsters, we'll get out the vote just like always.
For this victory, the intrepid NY-3 Democrats deserve ALL the credit.

(108,485 posts)Democrat Tom Suozzi won a hotly contested special election for Congress on Tuesday, the Associated Press projected, retaking a seat in suburban New York and offering his party some reassurance amid high anxiety about President Bidens political vulnerabilities.
Suozzi beat Republican nominee Mazi Pilip to replace Republican George Santos, who was indicted for fraud and then expelled from Congress late last year amid revelations that he fabricated much of his life story. The race for New Yorks 3rd district long viewed as a dead heat played out in a suburban part of Long Island that favored President Biden by 8 points in 2020 but then swung toward Republicans.
National issues dominated the campaign, making Tuesdays vote this years first high-profile test of the parties messages on abortion, the economy and, above all, immigration. Suozzi represented the area for six years previously and campaigned as a moderate who wanted to work across the aisle. But with New York City struggling to absorb more than 100,000 migrants arriving from the southern border, much of the campaign centered on what polling suggests is Democrats toughest issue.
Suozzis victory capped a long list of Democratic wins in recent special elections, which have showcased the partys ability to turn out their base and tap into anger at GOP-backed abortion restrictions since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Democrats spent millions of dollars attacking Pilips pro-life stance even though she said she would not support a national ban on the procedure.

(13,082 posts)Cornacky on msnbc was saying this is a younger, higher college educated district. Suozzi's win is even higher than POTUS in 2020 (Biden won by 8 pts). This shows that Nassau Cty residents value candidate experience, sensibility, and character.
I see this as a great setup for and a foretelling of the general later this year

(13,082 posts)1. Republicans' historically narrow majority got even smaller.
2. Republicans continue to struggle in the suburbs.
3. Democrats showed they can defend themselves on immigration.
4. Abortion rights continue to be something Democrats will run on with good reason.
5. Candidates and money do matter.
NPR is spot on on the 5 point above. Hopefully a sign of what's to come in the general.
