Wisconsin officials shut down effort to kick Trump off ballot

Wisconsin election officials have declined to review a complaint attempting to remove former President Trump from the states primary ballot, citing the 14th Amendment.
Madison, Wis., brewery owner Kirk Bangstad filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Elections Commission on Thursday, claiming Trump should be removed from the ballot due to his actions surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The commission said the complaint was thrown out for procedural reasons, and it lists members of the commission itself as respondents.
The complaint was disposed of without consideration by the Commission, spokesperson Riley Vetterkind said in a Thursday statement to the media. It is the position of the Commission that a complaint against the Commission, against Commissioners in their official capacities, or against Commission staff, warrants an ethical recusal by the body.
Bangstads complaint relies on the same arguments as removal efforts in Colorado and Maine, which have been accepted, pending legal appeals. The 14th Amendment bars those who engage in insurrection from holding office. The Maine Secretary of State and the Colorado Supreme Court found that Trumps Jan. 6 conduct fell under that definition.

(51,389 posts)I didn't find anything in the state constitution that might cover it.
This needs to be put on a path to the State Supreme Court ASAP!

(6,680 posts)Not surprising that the WEC, with equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans (making it designed to be ineffective), would pass.
Now a lawsuit can be filed in Dane County. Eventually, it may go to the WI Supreme Court.
Bravo Kirk Bangstad for taking action!
Thank you.

(19,666 posts)I don't know what brewery he owns.
I don't drink, but some emails of appreciation and patronage might be in order for those that do.

(10,182 posts)from Minocqua Brewing Company. It's in the northern Wisconsin town of Minocqua (very beautiful area). We used to wilderness camp near there often when when we were younger.
These people who own and run the brewery are very politically active, all for the good, so we try to support them. We have another business like them in Milwaukee, Penzey's Spices. Not only are the spices the best you can buy quality wise, Bill Penzey is a lifelong, dedicated liberal and activist.
