Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot dies at 84
Source: Reuters
May 1 (Reuters) - Canadian musician Gordon Lightfoot, the prolific singer-songwriter known for such folk-pop hits as "If You Could Read My Mind" and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," died on Monday in a Toronto hospital. He was 84.
He died of natural causes, his family said in a statement released by publicist Victoria Lord.
Known for his evocative lyrics and melodic compositions, Lightfoot received five Grammy nominations over the years and won 17 Juno awards, Canada's equivalent music honor.
Lightfoot achieved the height of his popularity in the 1970s, with songs from albums such as "Sundown," "Summertime Dream" and "Dream Street Rose" that built on his guitar-driven folk roots to produce more rock and pop-oriented songs.
He retained a loyal following in Canada and the United States through extensive concert touring.

(16,994 posts)Saw him in concert in 1977. He had the entire audience singing to 30,000 Pounds of Bananas.
A Better Place To Be was my #1 Favorite story song.
Gordon Lightfoot will be missed as well. The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down from the big lake they call Gichagoomie........

(4,274 posts)I first heard when Peter, Paul and Mary covered this by Gordon. That video is easy and wonderful but this cover has been favorite for awhile. Betsy Legg. I put her up also because she is something of a mystery and most of the info available just has her playing in the '70's in a club in Atlanta and some other appearances. Her one album is worthwhile in its' entirety.

(611 posts)Pretty high praise, but I don't say it as hype. I question the value of a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but if Cat Stevens is there why the hell isn't Gordon Lightfoot?

Canada has just lost 2 musical greats - Gordon Lightfoot and Tim Bachman.
R.I.P. to them both.
