Russia says U.S. Patriot missiles in Ukraine won't stand in its way
Source: Reuters
Russia said that Ukraine acquiring Patriot missiles from the United States, announced during President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's visit to Washington, would not help settle the conflict or prevent Moscow from achieving its goals.
Though the Patriot air defence system is widely regarded as advanced, President Vladimir Putin dismissed it as "quite old", telling reporters Moscow would find a way to counter it. At the same time, he said Russia wants an end to the war in Ukraine and that this would inevitably involve a diplomatic solution.
"Our goal is not to spin the flywheel of military conflict, but, on the contrary, to end this war," Putin said. "We will strive for an end to this, and the sooner the better, of course."
These comments drew quick U.S. scepticism. White House spokesman John Kirby said Putin had "shown absolutely zero indication that he's willing to negotiate" an end to the war.

(114 posts)"By the 1980s the Patriot was redesigned to target incoming enemy missiles. Today, the latest iterations of the antimissile system can track incoming targets from up to 100 kilometers away and destroy them within 40 kilometers from the launcher. The latest Patriot missiles employ high-precision "hit-to-kill" targeting in which the missile explodes on impact, rather than in the vicinity of an enemy projectile."

(7,588 posts)But as with all such systems, they get fairly frequent updates.
After all, the original version of the AIM-9 missile was introduced in the 1950's. The newest version, the AIM-9X is still a cutting edge AtA missile.

(12,673 posts)Kinda hard to do that when you only have 3-13 of them, while the US has about 195 F-22 Raptors and over 450 F-35's in it's inventory, the F-35 is the premier 5th Gen stealth fighter in the world and far outclasses anything Russia has in it's inventory.
I suspect that Putin won't want to send his limited number of SU-57's against the Patriots.

(649 posts)I'd think there is a fear of their ability to shoot down Russian missiles before they hit Ukrainian targets.
Isn't it fascinating how these defensive systems are viewed as provocation by the pro-russian crowd? They are upset that Russian missiles are being shotdown before they hit targets. It's even more amazing that some of these people claim to be anti-war

Quite old...find a way...You are too late, Putin, if you are still looking for a way to counter them. The WAR will be over with Crimea back in the fold before you "find a way" to counter them. Try to keep up, Vlad, you are embarrassing yourself.

(8,894 posts)Retired Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, former commander of US Army Europe, told CNN that there is likely some unrealistic expectations about what a Patriot battery will be able to do for Ukraine. It wont, for example, be available to use immediately after the US agrees to provide it it takes months to train troops on how to use the complex system, Hertling said, adding that training US troops to serve as maintainers or repairmen takes around a year. And it wont be able to provide blanket cover for the entire country.
These systems dont pick up and move around the battlefield, Hertling said. You put them in place somewhere that defends your most strategic target, like a city, like Kyiv. If anyone thinks this is going to be a system that is spread across a 500-mile border between Ukraine and Russia, they just dont know how the system operates.
