Ohio redistricting panel charts course to 4th map proposal
Source: AP
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) The Ohio Redistricting Commission has decided to look for two independent mapmakers and a mediator to help come up with new district maps following the Ohio Supreme Court's rejection of a third set of maps presented by the Republican-dominated panel.
The commission decided Saturday afternoon to seek recommendations for the two independent mapmakers to join the four mapmakers already working with Republican and Democratic lawmakers in drafting a fourth set of maps for Ohio House and Ohio Senate districts. A mediator is to be sought to help resolve disputes.
The seven-member commission hopes to approve the choices in a Monday night meeting, but the current mapmakers and one staff member of each commissioner are to immediately begin meeting to identify complex issues" and areas of agreement and disagreement to be presented to the independent mapmakers and the mediator. All are ordered to follow state high court rulings and the state constitution.
The state's highest court last week in a 4-3 vote rejected the last plan even as final ballots were being prepared for the May 3 primary, ordering new maps submitted to the secretary of state by March 28 and filed with the court the following day.

(12,472 posts)The Chief Justice makes a ruling that supports the Ohio Constitution and the obstructionist/ right wing radicals in the Legislature call for her impeachment after 20 years of distinguished service!
This is embarrassing for all voting citizens in Ohio. Mark my words. The Federal government is going to come in and define the districts for us...now that the Republicans have clearly demonstrated they will not follow the constitution. And by the way, there is not going to be a May 3 primary. Nobody is that stupid.
Stay tuned folks...

My Congressman is Mike Turner, a decent Mayor who ended up in the Freedom Caucus in between fighting his wife for her money!

(49 posts)The only federal intervention available would be from a right wing supreme court that has, thus far, denied certiorari on almost all redistricting cases not based on racial discrimination.
So, we should hope that the feds stay out of it. The other possibility is that a federal district court judge sides with the R bags and upholds the currently gerrymandered lines through 2024 because of the lame too close to the election doctrine.

(15,292 posts)own maps if the redistricting commission continues producing unconstitutional maps, imo. The US supreme court has repeatedly refused to get involved in these cases.

We can thank an honest Republican, Justice OConner for this. Even having his son refuse to recuse himself from the Court did not work!
We have Nan Whaley or John Cranley to choose. Nan rebuilt Dayton, John rebuilt Cincinnati.
Then we have Tim Ryan for Senator! The mouthpiece of the little people!

(69 posts)I live in Ohio and cannot believe the state Supreme Court has not yet threatened the Ohio Redistricting Commission with fines and jail for contempt and to force compliance with the court's orders.
Here's my solution for the Ohio Supreme Court until the commission complies with the court orders:
1. Impose a $10,000 cash fine on each commission member with the stipulation the fine must be paid out of earned, not donated, borrowed, campaign or other non-earned funds.
2. Triple the fine each day starting on Day 2.
3. Incarcerate as a group in a county jail with no visitation privileges by outsiders except independent map makers.
Watch how fast compliance happens once fines and jail are in place.
