Successful Surgery For Pakistani Girl Whose Shooting Has Caused Outrage

Source: NPR

After several hours of surgery, the girl whose shooting by the Taliban has caused deep anger in Pakistan and has exposed that nation's "deepest fault line," is said to be in stable condition.

Malala Yousufzai, our colleague Philip Reeves reports from Islamabad, is surrounded by her family. The BBC says doctors successfully removed a bullet from her head. Pakistan's Express Tribune newspaper says doctors have decided she will not need to be sent abroad for more treatment.

As Phil said earlier on Morning Edition, what happened to Malala on Tuesday has led to "one of the most disturbing images to emerge from years of conflict in Pakistan: A 15-year-old girl lies on a hospital bed, with a bullet wound in her head.

"This is her punishment."

And why has this happened to her?

"Because," Phil said, "she had the courage to demand the right for girls like her to get an education. Because she criticized violent Islamist militants who want to make sure they can't."

Neurosurgeons would have some idea because they can see the area of damage, but then there was swelling and that kind of damage isn't as easy to determine. Really a wait and see, like you say.

.... But I always make the distinction that religion isn't the problem, fundamentalism in religion is the problem.
Just leaving fundamentalism behind is enough for a much more beautiful world. And it also seems possible to accomplish.

I'm a happy None of the Above but I sure do have many level-headed, fun, reasonable Christian, Jewish and Muslim friends. They don 't need to be addressed because they aren't the problem.

Still.... Leaving all religion behind would be fine.

male-dominated religions

That covers a wide realm of deity worshipers who seem to prevail on those who don't use faith to take any number of positions on women's, gay, war rights/initiatives. Don't be too quick to bathe in the Islamaphobia blood pool while ignoring the homegrown religious "right" that empowers their own destruction of women, the poor and signifies a multitude of cultural aversion.

We need to end our drone war, which only makes things worse for them, and let the Pakistanis solve their own problems. Horrible behavior like this from the Taliban should motivate them. I wish them the best.

It astounds me that women are on average more religious than men, with all the religious oppression they have suffered throughout history, It's like a kind of Stockholm Syndrome.

don't allow them to drive, and shoot them in the head for "promoting Western values", are certainly their enemy.

OTOH I don't think Barack Obama and Joe Biden are "enemies" to women, their Christian faith and Catholicism notwithstanding.

Useless, useless predators.

All the evil our CIA has done in South American banana republics and every other corner of the world, I'd like to see them send some agents to take out Taliban militants one by one until they're all wiped out. That would be a selfless humanitarian act. Of course that's too much to ask for.

I hope this girl is ok mentally.

Oct. 11 (Bloomberg) -- A 14-year-old Pakistani activist remains in critical condition two days after Taliban gunmen shot her in the head as political rivals united to condemn the attack and offer help.

Malala Yousufzai is being moved to an army-run hospital in Rawalpindi from the northwest city of Peshawar to get better care, local news channels including Geo Television reported, citing military spokesman General Asim Saleem Bajwa.

The Oct. 9 attack on Yousufzai, who began writing blog posts at age 11 documenting Taliban repression in her native Swat Valley, drew condemnation from leaders in Pakistan and abroad. Opposing political parties, Islamist groups and women’s rights activists have called for nationwide protests tomorrow.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf called for prayers for her speedy recovery as her condition remains critical after doctors removed a bullet yesterday during surgery that lasted three hours, according to an e-mailed statement from his office today. Yousufzai’s posts for the British Broadcasting Corp. had focused on a Taliban ban against girls attending school.

girls/women in such regions?

Not that this is the ideal situation but I don't think these are the folks that will respond well to reason or outrage. They do however respond predictably and satisfactorily to being shot in the head repeatedly.
