Mary Trump Sues President and Family, Claiming Fraud of Millions
Source: NYT
In her best-selling memoir, Mary L. Trump, President Trumps niece, told a family story that detailed the ways in which she claims her relatives the president among them tricked, bullied and ultimately cheated her out of an inheritance worth tens of millions of dollars.
On Thursday, more than two months after the book was published and a little more than one month before the election, Ms. Trump told her story again this time in a lawsuit.
The suit, filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, accused Mr. Trump, his sister Maryanne and their brother Robert, who died in August, of fraud and civil conspiracy. It seeks to recover the millions of dollars Ms. Trump claims to have lost.
In its first sentence, the lawsuit says that, for the Trumps, fraud was not just the family business it was a way of life. Beginning in the 1980s, the suit contends, the president and his siblings took control of the New York City real estate empire their father, Fred Trump Sr., had built and exploited it to enrich themselves to the detriment of everyone around them.

(32,017 posts)I read her book, and I am certain that she has legitimate grievances. Whether or not they are actionable at this point is another question. Her claims are not frivolous. As an attorney, I would not hesitate to take her case.

(2,007 posts)The obvious thought is that the suit gets Dastardly Donnie's misdeeds in the news during campaign season. (I imagine anything uncovered by the discovery process would likely come too late for campaign season.)
Just to explore alternative motivations: Does it benefit her to do this as/before her uncle Robert's estate is being settled?
Laelth
(32,017 posts)I am not certain about the timing re. Roberts estate, but from reading her book it is clear that money is not what motivates her. She has timed this lawsuit to do maximum damage to Uncle Donalds re-election campaign. For Mary, its not about the money. Its about saving the country from a very evil manand she would know.

(47,285 posts)She is experiencing considerable success right now, so I don't think money is her primary objective. She clearly wants to undermine Donald as she views him as a serious threat to the country.

(2,007 posts)As I said above, that's my first instinct. If she happens to get anything out of the discovery that helps to poison the well for Ivanka or Junior 2024, all the better (though I don't imagine there'd be much that would stick to the next generation down from the shenanigans.)
I do wonder a little if the release of the tapes having now likely completely torpedoed the relationship with her aunt Maryanne, she has less to lose than if she'd filed the lawsuit earlier.
Laelth
(32,017 posts)She loathes Maryanne, I think, and with good reason. Maryanne screwed over Mary and her brother just like Donald, Elizabeth, and Robert did. I seriously doubt that Mary is shedding any tears over her loss of whatever relationship she had with her Aunt Maryanne.

(32,017 posts)That has never been her prime motivator. Shes in this for the country. She has timed this suit to do maximum damage to Uncle Donalds re-election campaign. I hope that she succeeds. If she gets wealthier too, all the better.

Let him pay for his own lawyer, when he cant afford much more than a court appointed lawyer fresh from an on line degree from a scam university.

(36,389 posts)It will be interesting to see how the orange anus' doctored records square with the haul of records Mary acquired (32 boxes, I think).
Also, it will be interesting if the Trump Campaign pays the orange anus' legal expenses.
Bummer, this will all shake out after the election.
That being said, Mary Trump did make a good argument in her book how she was cheated out of a ton of money. Money that was mysteriously transferred from Fred Trump's accounts into ones controlled by the orange anus. When the smoke clears we may learn the orange anus also short changed both his sister, Elizabeth and Maryanne.
