'More dire than we think': Health officials brace for Trump diatribes

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by JudyM (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Politico

Trump’s rebuke of his own Centers for Disease Control director and insistence on delivering a vaccine faster than the agency believes possible has alarmed officials throughout the government’s public health bureaucracy. And it’s swiftly erased any notion that with Caputo sidelined, the intense political pressure on the department’s Covid-19 efforts would evaporate as well.

Instead, health officials are now bracing for the worst, as the White House hits the home stretch of a re-election push that rests heavily on convincing the public that a viable vaccine is just around the corner.

“I really believe that things are going to be more dire than we think,” one HHS official said of the weeks to come. “It’s frightening.”

Trump’s sharp break on Wednesday with CDC chief Robert Redfield – who he insisted was “confused” and “incorrect” about the merits of mask wearing and a vaccine distribution timeline likely to stretch into next year – snapped a brief moment of calm for a health department that spent the last week embroiled in successive controversies over Caputo’s behavior.

Be very afraid.

That's the whole Trump cult message. They are frightened people, some are just plain cowards and bullies.

Moves to disrupt the independence of the CDC must be opposed aggressively and proactively, they're coming.

But don't be afraid, don't use the language of victims and be frightened by what they plan. They win if you do.

They expect people to step out of their way, that'll never happen from me. They have to, figuratively, go around--I'm not going anywhere.

Dr. Fauci said that Dr. Redfield was exactly right when he said a vaccine would likely not be available for widespread use before late 2nd quarter, early 3rd quarter 2021. This contradicts Trumps assertion that Redfield either didn't understand the question or misspoke. Translation: Trump is lying.

I believe that is going to happen. Maybe on this weekend or maybe next. Some will finally step forward.
Maybe well known retired Republicans. Maybe a few governors who are not up for reelection. Maybe
this person or that person. I don't know who. But this putting down CDC chief Dr. Robert Redfield, publically, as being ...."confused" and "incorrect" is the key that opens up the sealed box.

...It is back to...." life or death"....and ...Trump thinks he knows it all..
..... More than officials at the CDC....................................................
............................................And Donald Trump knows nothing at all.

Serious question.
I would like nothing more myself, but you got me thinking about who that would be.

Ex generals including Colin Powell, don't seem to have any weight
Ex high ranking Republicans like Michael Steel doesn't do it
Other Republicans like those in The Lincoln Project doesn't make them budge
No celebrity, from DeNiro to Streep, or any talk show host, have any influence.
Members of the Trump family speaking out even have no effect

I honestly cannot think of any top Republican or other revered American who has not spoken up yet, that would cause the cult members to snap out of it. Can you?

(interesting how one of the definitions for 'base' is low, foul, contemptible, mean-spirited, or a selfish lack of human decency)

to turn away. 20 years from now they'll still be assuring one another that they, and the Fuhrer, were right. The metaphorical "stake" I'm looking for is a crushing electoral loss and rebuke by the (sane) American people. ---- ----

... it will not have been properly tested or carefully prepared. All the normal safeguards are being ignored in order to rush this out before the election. I would be very skeptical!

If they can make this "vaccine" so quickly, why can't they make enough test kits so that all Americans can be properly tested for the virus - including those who are asymptomatic? We'll never know who needs the vaccine until the asymptomatic carriers have been identified.

All they can do is keep telling the truth and hope sensible people (80%) keep listening. Only 20% think the country should go back to "normal."

Their message is getting through. That old blowhard is irrelevant.

thus the timing of it all. When men and women of science inform us of the true state of things, he can't stand that. They all want to contradict him, because he is wrong. He can't stand being contradicted.

I am waiting for Russia's contribution. Their vaccine coming here for testing? Or, ours going there?

Whatever. Keep wearing your masks, keep social distancing, and be patient. There is no way that they have created a vaccine for this pandemic in this short period of time. Does anyone think that other countries have not been searching frantically for a solution? Only us?

If there were a cure or vaccine, we would have heard about it before. It is so disgusting that this lowlife is handling the pandemic in this way--for himself only.

I am not going to take any unproven vaccine, anymore than I am going to drink bleach for this asshole.
