Fraternal Order of Police Endorses Trump
Source: Newsweek
In a tweet, the National Fraternal Order of Police, which represents over 350,000 members, made the announcement Friday.
The endorsement is the latest that the president, a staunch advocate for law enforcement, has received recently from police-related organizations as he looks to defeat Democratic rival Joe Biden in the upcoming November election. The support came amid nationwide protests in the last few months about systemic racism and police brutality following the death of George Floyd, a Black man, in Minneapolis while in police custody.
In July, the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) gave its stamp of approval for the president. In a statement, NAPO President Michael McHale wrote: "Our endorsement recognizes your steadfast and very public support for our men and women on the front lines, especially during this time of unfair and inaccurate opprobrium being directed at our members by so many."
The following month, the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, also backed Trump. "Many times, people say that a union like ours, law enforcement groups, give endorsements," NYC PBA President Patrick Lynch told Trump during an appearance at the president's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. "Not in the New York City PBA, sir. In the New York City PBA, sir, you earn the endorsement and you've earned this endorsement. I'm proud to give it."
Another law enforcement union in New York, the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association, gave Trump an endorsement.

If he was an actual advocate of law enforcement he would have given himself up to the proper authorities decades ago.

1) The money is also used for lobbying.
2) They don't refer themselves as a labor union. It is police association or FOP.
3) Labor unions - real labor unions do not solicit donations to help support their members from the general public like FOP or other related police groups.
4) Labor unions derived support for members in need from their own members.

Then the blue line won't exist anymore.

(1,576 posts)Not surprised at all. All these Police Protective Leagues, Benevolent Associations and Unions are breeding grounds for Fascists. Law enforcement needs to be prohibited from ever organizing or joining any such groups.
As Calvin Coolidge said when, as Massachusetts Governor he put down the Boston Police Strike in 1919, "There is no right to strike against the public safety by anyone, anywhere, anytime." And that's what they're doing by endorsing Traitor Trump.
Dawson Leery

I feel exactly the same way. They enjoy having the power over people's life and death, and they don't want to lose that power. I know a lot of ex-Cops, and if there's one thing they miss it's exercising that power over people. Most of them should never have had that power bestowed upon them.

I expect our chapter of the Guardian Civic League (organization of black police officers) will formally protest this and will express support for Joe Biden like they did for Hillary Clinton back in 2016.
(as a note, the FOP supposedly endorsed Bill Clinton in a departure from their usual GOP focus and neglected to endorse Rmoney, another rare aberration)

(6,265 posts)and their members don't give a damn about vets either. But wait it's the police dept's that many vets apply to when they get home. Many vets are the police. I don't get it. Why would so many of them be so racist? It's not just old school racist cops, the videos show young cops. I guess these associations are banking on trump to save them when he's reelected. They've bought into the lie of defunding and restraint in arrests of unarmed people. And no matter what police reform is necessary now to stop all these unwarranted and racist shootings and killings of unarmed African-Americans.
And don't get me wrong all police are on a tear these days. Police retraining in non-lethal restraint. That's a start if they will abide by it. So much is wrong. And is it just me but all this huge uptick in unwarranted killings didn't start until the republican wars started and the troops started rotating home to civilian lives.. 9/11. Then trump comes into the picture as "law and order" guy.

(4,846 posts)During the 1960s the FOP opposed the creation of police review boards, spearheaded by Robert F. Kennedy, at one point describing them as a "sinister movement against law enforcement". The FOP also clashed with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on the issue of police brutality, seeing it as a "liberal attempt to discredit law enforcement". The Order was "heartened by Richard Nixon's emphasis on law and order", though it claimed to remain strictly apolitical.

They will fight tooth and nail to hang onto that advantage. I suggest the police deserve no quarter. Repeal their legal immunity and clean up every police unit in the country. A purge is needed - one based on police records and reports of malfeasance.
