LA Sheriff's Dept: Deputies kill Black man who dropped a gun

Source: AP

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two deputies fatally shot a black man who scuffled with them after they tried to stop him for riding a bicycle in an unlawful manner, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said. A crowd gathered and marched to the sheriff’s station after the Monday afternoon shooting, demanding justice.

Sheriff’s Lt. Brandon Dean said two deputies from the South Los Angeles station were driving when the saw a man riding his bicycle in violation of vehicle codes, according to the Los Angeles Times. It was not known which codes the man allegedly broke, Dean said.

When deputies tried to stop the man, he dropped his bike and ran, with deputies in pursuit, Dean said. Deputies again tried to make contact with the man, and Dean said he punched a deputy in the face. The man then dropped a bundle of clothes he’d been carrying and they spotted a black handgun in the bundle, at which point both deputies opened fire, Dean said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the handgun was recovered and no deputies were injured.

Deputies spotted. A gun in the pile and therefore opened fire? Jesus the excuses are getting more lame everyday.

White guys walk around with AR15s including a certain white killer walking right by the cops, no problem.

Black guy drops a gun, they shoot him.

(On edit: assuming that it were even true, that there was a gun. We can’t count on truthful police reports, unfortunately.)

On the courteous but hardly firm presumption the deputies did not plant the gun, they did not know of its existence until it was out of the man's possession. Are we supposed to believe the deputies believed that gun was discarded just to distract them while the man produced another weapon, or punched one again?

They shot him for making them chase him, and for getting a good lick in when they caught up to him. It got their blood up, and they were cued to shoot at the sight of a gun, to such a pitch that where the gun was did not matter to them.

If, upon contact with the police, he runs... and then drops a bundle of clothing containing a gun... one can imagine a violation of California Vehicle Code 21205.

No person operating a bicycle shall carry any package, bundle or article which prevents the operator from keeping at least one hand upon the handlebars.

But it could be dozens of other things. I'm just not sure why they wouldn't just say "failed to yield to a pedestrian" or "had no lights at night" of "failed to stop at a signal" (etc.)

Riding a bike in LA with a bundle of clothes seems odd enough. But then when you get off the bike and run from the cops and you decide to take the bundle with you? The whole story just seems odd.

speeding, pedaling bare footed, no seat belt on vehicle? Is this all cops have to do to "protect
& serve"? We have way to many cop cars looking for minor infractions because they have
nothing better to do, they even harass people walking. About time as a nation we put a lot
fewer cop cars on our streets, or only allow them to give out tickets if there is an accident.
All our politicians think putting more cops on the streets will solve crime, why don't they try
putting more detectives on staff instead? Really want to solve crime, how about raising the
minimum wage to $20 bucks an hour and get everybody out of poverty?

His crime, why he was pursued, why he was killed. For the rittenhouses of the world, evening travelling across state lines to kill strangers at a peaceful protest is not a crime cops get involved in.

Another inexcusable violent crime by cop.

... that stopping it justified killing a man?

Was he about to ride into a stadium full of people with a nuclear bomb & detonate it? What? Why? Explain.

Jesus I am so done with this crap.

riding a bicycle in "violation of vehicle codes" that means a pretextual stop. Otherwise they would have said "We stopped him going the wrong way on the road', or "he was weaving back and forth in the lane".

Everything else is bullshit pretext.

Then they saw a gun on the ground and decided that they would be judge, jury, executioner because he was black and as a police officer you can get away with murder if the person you murder is black.

Fuck the police. This shit needs to stop.
