Major internet outage: Dozens of websites and apps are down

Source: CNN

CenturyLink, an internet service provider that is supposed to keep websites up and running, was down itself for much of Sunday morning.

That meant Cloudflare, Hulu, the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Feedly, Discord, and dozens of other services reported connectivity problems Sunday morning. When Cloudflare went down, it took dozens of website sand online services along with it. The company said the problem was with a third-party "transit provider," and its service was becoming increasingly stable over the course of the day.

"Today we saw a widespread Internet outage online that impacted multiple providers," said John Graham-Cumming, Cloudflare CTO. "Cloudflare's automated systems detected the problem and routed around them, but the extent of the problem required manual intervention as well."

CenturyLink, formerly known as Level 3, confirmed there was an IP outage impacting Content Delivery Networks (CDN), and that all services had been restored as of 11:12 am ET. The telecommunications company said it was unable to comment on certain customers because of customer proprietary network information.

was down all morning - the device itself worked fine, there's a Bluetooth connection to the app, but the internet part wasn't working, kept showing a message about being out of service. Bet that was part of the big outage. Works fine now.

They make up for in unreliability.

If it weren't for previous bad experiences with the bigger company before I moved to where they were the only alternative, I would have dumped them years ago, when they were out for almost a week.

When I logged on to see the LOL Sunday cats, not one image would load. Upon further investigation on my part, I found that none of the images on the home page would load either. The images from videos were there but that was it for images. When I returned a few hours later, everything worked.

I was just trying to use my laptop as a router, by plugging an Ethernet cable-only device into my laptop's Ethernet to USB-C adapter cable and sharing the WiFi with the new port and the device kept refusing to connect to its internet host.

I just couldn't figure out what was wrong, because everything should have worked fine.

Bad timing.

No explanation. Just came back up a little while later. During the outage, my iPad kept showing I was connected to internet but nothing loaded. I commented to my husband that anyone who wants to cripple this nation should just hobble our Bundled cable, internet and phone services. It would bring things to a grinding halt and destroy communications.

Our landline was with MCI. We got an offer with Cox that sounded good. It was not so great but here we are. Just FYI for anyone thinking of going with all internet type phone service. When the cable/internet goes down, guess what else goes down, too?? After Hurricane Ivan in 2004, when all other services went out, our phone (a landline at the time) was the only thing that worked. Everything else was dead in the water. No power, water pressure nearly zero, contaminated water. Things go from bad to worse when your utilities are gone.

P.S. We have underground utilities in our neighborhood, but somewhere along the line (out of our neighborhood) they hook up to the power grid above ground. So when THAT connection is severed, so is our electrical service.
