Days after photos of packed hallways go viral, Paulding high school reports 9 COVID-19 cases
Source: WSB News
PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. Just days after a photo of crowded hallways at North Paulding High School went viral, parents were informed Saturday of 9 confirmed cases of coroanvirus at the school.
Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Nicole Carr got a copy of the letter. Principal Gabe Carmona wrote that six students and three staff members who were in school last week have since reported positive tests for COVID-19.
The school district has not announced if students who were exposed will have to quarantine and have not given any notice about shutting down classrooms.

(70,447 posts)In a letter to the community, Superintendent Brian Otott said the photo was taken out of context, writing: "Class changes at the high school level are a challenge when maintaining a specific schedule. It is an area we are continuing to work on in this new environment to find practicable ways to further limit students from congregating. Students are in this hallway environment for just a brief period as they move to their next class. ... There is no question that the photo does not look good. ... Wearing a mask is a personal choice, and there is no practical way to enforce a mandate to wear them."

Just mandate for students. Hell, there's no running in the hall, no fighting. Signs everywhere., masks save lives. Want to be an adult, wear masks. It's a matter of doing it or die

rules about clothing everyday. You got sent home to change if the words on your tee shirt violated the dress code.
This principal is full of shit.
Wearing a mask is not a personal choice.

Mask wearing is a personal choice, and it takes over 15 minutes of close contact to spread the virus, he said.
There were students that were forced into those crowded halls because they got put on a waitlist for online learning.
What a horrible person to be in charge of Paulding County Schools.

We just don't have all of the facts surrounding the infection mechanism yet.

The student who took that photo should get an apology and an award for having courage and strength to stand up for what's safe for all students.

Seriously, if you think the Re-Open Brigade is going to reverse course because of nine cases, you're dreaming. They didn't go into this thinking that forcing people back into "normalcy" wasn't going to have any effect. They knew full well that re-opening would lead to more cases; they just think that people need to accept them as a "normal" part of life in 2020 and forge on anyway. Nine cases? I doubt they'd reverse course if there were ninety cases, or even ninety deaths.

(51,567 posts)This is the tip of the iceberg and in two months (right around election time...good) they will be seeing lots of schools opening and closing on a continual basis. That will cost the idiotic school boards tons of money that they and the govt don't have.

(4,427 posts)I bet by the end of next week, another 90 at least do so.
It can take a week for sypmtons to develop for most people - imagine that those who already showed symptoms, AnD got tested, AND got their results back, AND called and told the school - are just a fraction of one days case spread. Give it a week or two, and the whole damn school will test positive.
I am so sorry for the loss of those who will die because it these stupid decisions.
I spent part of today arguing with an asshole on FB who wants schools to reopen and all scholastic sports to resume immediately.
He simply denies the reality that kids will become sick, and that some of them will die, and that some of them will sicken members of their family who will then die.
I asked him which of his two kids he's willing to sacrifice, and he openly threatened me with bodily harm. Somehow FB didn't remove that post, but a few months back when I suggested that someone likes to fuck squirrels, I got thrown in FB jail for a week.

I understand that it won't be easy to keep the child home. But his or her life is on the line.
A 16-year-old can be home without babysitting. You can set up a program of home study. Try to find other kids from the same school who are signed up for the same courses and see if the kids can get together (online, of course) to study. You may even find parents to teach at least part of the time.
For guidance, search "homeschooling," "homeschooling organizations," and "homeschool curriculums" on the Internet. Each state has standards for every course. I'm no expert, but I've searched out enough of them to have an idea how to find them. If you want to talk about that, PM me.
Do you have time to jump through all the legal homeschooling hoops? If not, do it anyway. This is too important.
Edited to add some stuff.

But, if you catch a student smoking a cigarette, you're going to punish them, right? If you catch 2 students having sex, you're going to punish them, right? What a fucking load.
Make an announcement over the PA and tell them what the fuck is going on! No mask, no pass! Instant F! There's your fucking mandate you stupid fucking idiot!

(5,969 posts)Partially, I also have to blame the parents and students for them not wearing masks because it seems the vast majority didn't. Didn't the parents care for the well-being of their kids? But long indoor activities were doomed from the start.
It's almost inevitable that at least some students will go through the trauma of having killed their teachers, parents or siblings.
Opening schools that fast during a pandemic in a state with rising case numbers was madness from the beginning. What happens to the students who will be put under quarantine eventually? They'll miss 2+ weeks and will probably have to make up much of the lost material at home anyways. Or is quarantine a personal choice as well?

(1,979 posts)how fast a virus, the flu, or lice spread throughout elementary and middle schools especially. And we haven't even discussed pre-k. We get notifications of epidemics at the schools on a regular basis. This is not going to go well and I pray to the Creator that we don't start seeing thousands of children become critically ill.
