President Trump's Iran envoy, Brian Hook, is stepping down, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed Thursday. He will be replaced with Venezuela envoy Elliott Abrams, a noted Iran hawk who will serve in both roles.

Why it matters: Hook had been tasked with executing Trump's "maximum pressure" policy toward Iran, working closely with Pompeo. That strategy has deepened tensions and thus far failed to force Iran back to the negotiating table, as Trump had hoped.

Sweet Jesus, can’t he just give it a rest! We have enough trouble in this world already! He has trampled on my every dream. I visited Iran in 2008 and it was a great learning experience. Some of my friends are old Peace Corps Iran returnees. I am taking an Iran History class and hoping to make Peace with Iran. Another nasty slap in the face from Mr. Trump who hasn’t yet caused enough trouble, I guess.

Hope is not a foreign policy. Why would Trump have thought that "maximum pressure" would have been a successful foreign policy against Iran. It makes no sense. It is delusional to think that way. But changing messenger means nothing without a shift in policy. None is mentioned here so we continue to muddle along. Just another in the string of failures for Trump.
