Rep. Rodney Davis diagnosed with Covid days after warning lawmakers about safety

Source: Politico

Days after delivering a presentation on office safety in dealing with Covid-19, Illinois Congressman Rodney Davis, the top Republican on the House Administration Committee, announced he has tested positive for the virus.

In a letter posted on his website, Davis said he tested positive Wednesday morning. He submitted to the test after one of his twice-daily temperature checks “clocked in at 99 degrees Fahrenheit, which is higher than normal for me,” he wrote.

“Because of the high temperature, my wife and I received a test this morning. While my test came back positive, my wife’s test came back negative. My staff who I’ve worked with in-person this week have received negative tests as well. Other than a higher-than-normal temperature, I am showing no symptoms at this time and feel fine.”

Davis has taken greater care than many of his Republican counterparts to wear a mask and adhere to social distancing rules. That, he said in a statement, is because his wife is a nurse and a cancer survivor, “which puts her in an at-risk category like so many Americans.”

... if he was around many other infected individuals who refused to wear masks, then the mask he was wearing (if it was an ordinary cotton cloth or "dust mask&quot obviously wasn't enough to protect him from the toxic air that his Republican colleagues were spewing everywhere.

Especially in doors and if I flies Id wear my $30 top of the line swim goggles although not prescription. Safety first

That said I’ve gone nowhere. Since 2-28 except 1 trip to Winco for a $500 condiment, spice & otc flue meds etc

cover my hair. Say, droplets get in my hair, then I touch my hair...then I touch my face. I have allergies so my face is always itchy. I'd rather error on the side of caution.

I can’t see without my eye glasses so I wear a face shield and a plastic lined beanie. The microscopic virus is a smart virus.

I also carry and use a see through Queens Umbrella in case I have to go inside. I’m high risk

Now I look like an alien but I’m still alive

Anyway all the gear is a better look than a coffin

I do the grocery shopping for the family, but we are careful to keep trips to a minimum and use stores that aren't too crowded. Mask-wearing is universal in stores around here, thank goodness.

What kind of condiment costs $500? Saffron? Truffle? Hummingbird tongue?

to have a reason to resign to get out of constant abuse by Trump and their dismal future in the minority party. That would explain the many meetings in close rooms without masks.

People who are truly "asymptomatic" basically means "no fever".

I wish to hell that they would stop hanging their hats on "temperature checks" as some be-all end-all means to confirm if someone is infected or not.

an elevation for HIM would mean a temperature increase so low grade it doesn't even meet the CDC threshold (100.4 F using Temporal thermometer) for suspicion. My own temp runs quite low as well (96.9 in the very early AM and no higher than 98.0 during the day) and in fact, the "so-called normal" temp of 98.6 has been shown to be artificially high for Americans in general, over the past several decades.

So, for him, that (99F) actually IS a low-grade temperature increase and thus he really is NOT asymptomatic.

That said, relying on temperature checks for most Americans, based on 100.4 or any other threshold is a false reliance and false premise. Testing testing testing~! Even batch testing would help.

We are normally in the 97 range. However given that it is summer in the U.S., and whether he has been in IL or down in D.C., it has been pretty hot all around the country this summer.

We are unfortunately in this "denial" stage of behavior changes and want to find anything possible to NOT have to adhere to the social distancing and mask-wearing, although I know it is very difficult to change habits.

What is really needed is a rapid, specific, and sensitive onsite test, and obviously all kinds of researchers have been trying to work on one (and not just something that is an antibody test).

He had to buck a Trump headwind inside his Party in order to wear a mask. Of course having a wife who is at risk no doubt made that decision easier, but still he did the right thing. I hope his case is one of the minor ones.

They don't have to wait for hours for an appointment or in line and wait days for a result.
