260 employees in Georgia's largest school district test positive for COVID-19 or are exposed

Source: USA Today

Hundreds of employees in Georgia's largest school district have either tested positive for COVID-19 or have been exposed to the virus, officials said.

Gwinnett County Public School teachers gathered for in-person planning Wednesday at 141 facilities across the county, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The next day about 260 employees were "excluded from work" because of the coronavirus.

The district, which is scheduled to reopen Aug. 12, has a reporting and tracing process in addition to the protocol for excluding employees who test positive or come into contact with a confirmed case, Sloan Roach, a spokeswoman for the district, told CNN.

"As of last Thursday, we had approximately 260 employees who had been excluded from work due to a positive case or contact with a case," Roach told the outlet. "This number is fluid as we continue to have new reports and others who are returning to work."

3. Kemp, state officials want to see in-person classes at Georgia schools

Georgia has managed to crack the top four States in total COVID-19 cases. Perhaps they have a chance to crack the top 3 and beat some larger states. I think even Florida is pumping the brakes slightly on school reopenings.

Gov. Brian Kemp and leading Georgia health and education officials want children sitting in classrooms for their first day of class, citing the benefits of in-person learning and comments from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield about reopening schools.

But Kemp said he hasn’t given thought to making in-person instruction mandatory statewide.

“I wouldn’t really want to speak to that. I haven’t really thought about that,” he said. “I think schools are trying to do the right thing and it’s just my hope that we’ll get kids back in the classroom.”

State health commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey said state officials “know and fully expect” for students and teachers to be infected, but the state is working to provide resources needed to protect individuals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states children “do not appear to be at higher risk for COVID-19 than adults.” Adults, the agency reports, make up most of the known cases to date.

Once those damn schools start opening, the numbers are going to skyrocket. How can they not see what's coming?
