Census, Cut Short A Month, Rushes To Finish All Counting Efforts By Sept. 30
Source: NPR
The Census Bureau is ending all counting efforts for the 2020 census on Sept. 30, a month shorter than previously announced, the bureau's director confirmed Monday in a statement. That includes critical door-knocking efforts and collecting responses online, over the phone and by mail.

These last-minute changes to the constitutionally mandated count of every person living in the U.S. threaten the accuracy of population numbers used to determine the distribution of political representation and federal funding for the next decade.
With roughly 4 out of 10 households nationwide yet to be counted and already delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, the bureau now has less than two months left to try to reach people of color, immigrants, renters, rural residents and other members of historically undercounted groups who are not likely to fill out a census form on their own.

Democrats in Congress and many census advocates have become increasingly concerned that the White House is pressuring the bureau to stop counting soon in order to benefit Republicans when House seats are reapportioned and voting districts are redrawn.

(10,864 posts)apportioning purposes (for congressional redistricting, some states may lose or gain House seats as a result, thus also affects the electoral college), and according to Minnesota Public Radio (or maybe it was NPR), on 7/21:
"They are still counting in the Census -- 40% have yet to be counted. The talk about not counting non-citizens (for Congressional apportioning purposes), will have a chilling effect on non-citizen participation in the Census"
(the above is from memory from what I heard on the radio, not an exact quote).
"chilling effect" - all the Trump talk about citizens and non-citizens and the Census, when the undocumented have always been highly suspicious of the Census...
not to mention Caligula pushed for a citizenship question on the Census for a long time before giving up ... but something about will be using other data from various agencies to determine citizenship status or somesuch
but I haven't seen / heard anything yet about Census might not be completed on time, though I had heard they were behind because of Covid
but I haven't heard of deliberately shortening the deadline on the Census until the OP
and then there's screwing with the postal service
