-- State continuing claims also increase by most since early May
-- Congress may let $600 weekly benefit expire without deal
The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased for a second straight week, a sign the economic rebound is increasingly at risk with Congress poised to potentially let supplemental $600 payments expire.
Initial claims through regular state programs rose to 1.43 million in the week ended July 25, up 12,000 from the prior week, a Labor Department report showed Thursday. There were 17 million Americans filing for ongoing benefits through those programs in the period ended July 18, up 867,000 from the prior week -- the largest increase since early May.

(10,939 posts)The above is the latest. I don't know why they have a 2 week lag in this number, but they do. This includes people collecting benefits under the federal programs including the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program. And no, that's not the $600/week check thing. No, there isn't double-counting. The PUA program is for gig and contract workers who are not eligible for the state unemployment insurance programs.
So people, please please, I beg of you all, please. It's not 17.0 million, please get that number out of your heads. Its 30.2 million. ALL unemployed people matter.

I get tired of reporters or bots who dont read beyond the 2nd paragraph of Labor Department press releases. 2.35 million initial state and federal unemployment claims. PUA claims (gig workers) now 41% of total unemployment. 20% of labor force on unemployment insurance.

It just doesnt let up. An astounding number of newly laid-off workers keeps filing for unemployment benefits week after week and pile on top of the people already unemployed. And the number of people who started working again isnt big enough to make a visible dent in the curve.
If you read this morning or heard on the radio that 16.2 million people were claiming unemployment insurance the continued claims and you thought that there were only 16.2 million people who claimed unemployment benefits, you fell victim to lazy misreporting in the media, by reporters or bots that didnt read the Labor Departments press release beyond the second paragraph.
Those 16.2 million were only the claims under state programs, and do not include the claims under federal programs. All combined, there were 31.8 million people on the unemployment rolls. Thats what the Labor Department reported further down in the press release.
There is a huge difference between 16.2 million and 31.8 million unemployed people! ...............(more)

(21,493 posts)I'm talking about getting the Hero's Act passed. I'm talking about trashing the 1.75 billion dollars in the Senate Bill to keep the FBI headquarters next to Trump's hotel, I'm talking about removing the provision from the Senate Bill that allows corporations to kill people and then can't be sued effective until 2024. I'm talking about trashing the 200 dollar added unemployment in the Senate Bill and keeping the 600 dollar benefit in the Hero's Act. Democrats have the Trump party's balls in a vise.

(22,651 posts)The maximum amount of Texas unemployment insurance is 26 weeks. For people that qualify, the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance can extend benefits to a maximum of 39 weeks through December 31, 2020
This pandemic isn't going away this year. Many corporations have set work from home to Jan/February 2021. They also may close their major facility offices permanently. That's thousands of local jobs and local taxes disappearing forever.
