New US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines on education and child care come down hard in favor of opening schools, saying children dont suffer much from coronavirus, are less likely than adults to spread it and suffer from being out of school.
But the new guidelines posted Thursday do recommend that local officials should consider closing schools, or keeping them closed, if there is substantial, uncontrolled transmission of the virus. The CDC has been promising new guidelines for more than a week, after demands from President Donald Trump that the agency alter its recommendations for opening schools.
It is critically important for our public health to open schools this fall, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said in a statement announcing the updates. School closures have disrupted normal ways of life for children and parents, and they have had negative health consequences on our youth. CDC is prepared to work with K-12 schools to safely reopen while protecting the most vulnerable.
The guidelines, posted online, start with an unsigned statement on the importance of reopening Americas schools this fall. The best available evidence indicates that COVID-19 poses relatively low risks to school-aged children, the statement reads...

More: Children appear to be at lower risk for contracting COVID-19 compared to adults. To put this in perspective, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of July 17, 2020, the United States reported that children and adolescents under 18 years old account for under 7 percent of COVID-19 cases and less than 0.1 percent of COVID-19-related deaths, it adds.
Scientific studies suggest that COVID-19 transmission among children in schools may be low. International studies that have assessed how readily COVID-19 spreads in schools also reveal low rates of transmission when community transmission is low....

In an act of politically motivated malpractice, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) late Thursday evening issued new, revised guidelines for reopening Americas schools amid a pandemic, with heavy emphasis on returning to in-person learning, willful encouragement to disregard isolated instances of infection within the schools, and deliberately misleading and incomplete information regarding transmission rates of the novel coronavirus among children.
According to the Washington Post, portions of these guidelines were actually written by Trump administration officials. Some of the guidance was written by White House officials rather than experts at the CDC, people familiar with the process said...

(52,440 posts)The reason it hasn't spread readily in schools so far is because the schools are *closed*!!!
Put kids *and teachers* in rooms of a over a dozen people all day and transmissions will skyrocket going to school does with every other airborne contagious disease.

(6,265 posts)children cough, sneeze, bring home and carry to school contagious virus's. They are human, small humans but humans none the less. How is it the disease vectors are so different for them. I know a flu bug can be brought home from classrooms, will be brought home, COVID-19 is a virus that is just as virulently contagious as the flu. I just don't understand how health professionals are cowed so easily CDC. Biden will start funding again IF IF cognitive idiot defunds. Come on! show some goddamn courage for the children's sake.
