Missouri will spend $15 million of coronavirus relief aid on promoting tourism

As many states enact restrictions to keep visitors out, Missouri is welcoming them in and spending $15 million of coronavirus relief aid on promoting tourism.
Gov. Mike Parson (R) announced the plan on Thursday, saying that it was important for people to get out and enjoy life a little bit. The funds, which the state received through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, will be directed to tourism marketing groups.
Those organizations can use the money to maintain their marketing focus and include messaging on safety measures that have been implemented by their attractions, Missouris tourism director, Stephen Foutes, said Thursday, according to the Kansas City Star. They can also apply for help covering the cost of new health protocols like temperature screenings.

(25,927 posts)I live in a different state, New Mexico, and my part of that state, specifically Santa Fe, is highly dependent on tourism. But honestly? I don't want to see tourists any time soon. And I'm noticing that when I see cars with Texas or Arizona plates, I feel a bit hostile.

I am concerned when the border opens, our infection rate will start to climb.
Apparently Canada is leery about opening up because of the infection rate in US.
Also live in a college town.
I know our numbers will go up once college comes back.
Who would want to go to Missouri ?

They are vehement defenders of all things conservative. I worry for them, both being near 70 and with previous health problems. But a tiny part of me will whisper "I told you so" if it happens.

(13,587 posts)He needs to spend that money on helping schools, hospitals, nursing homes, get PPE. More money for testing and supplies. Restore money to social services. Hope the Democratic candidate ( Nicole Galloway) running against him uses this in an ad against him.
