Alabama governor issues statewide mask order
Source: The Hill
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) announced a mandatory statewide mask order Wednesday, citing a 50 percent increase in new COVID-19 cases over the past two weeks.
Despite all our best efforts, were seeing increases in cases every day still occurring and were almost to the point where hospital ICUs are overwhelmed, Ivey said at a press conference.
Alabama reported 2,141 new cases overnight, bringing the states total number of confirmed cases to more than 58,000.
Ivey, who was reluctant to issue a mask order earlier in the pandemic, said she believes it will be hard to enforce the order.

(60,010 posts)The # of cases have tripled since she opened the state on Memorial Day, and it wasn't that closed,
just a stay at home order. Nothing about mask requirements.
She totally ignored medico's warnings, back then, and again these past 3 weeks of daily increased cases/deaths.

However, Ivey indicated she will not yet roll back some of the states reopening efforts. Gyms, salons, restaurants, bars, beaches, bowling alleys, casinos, arcades, theaters and retail stores have all been allowed to open at reduced capacity.
Clearly there are some other more restrictive actions we could take such as closing things back down but I dont want to go there unless there are absolutely no other options available, she said.

(2,505 posts)The precinct I voted at in Montgomery, AL for a Dem. primary run-off for a state board of education seat not only required masks but offered gloves for using the pens. But I'm pretty sure the really red counties didn't have any mask requirements.

(129,892 posts)and we had a max for a few days just under 2000/day back at our peak around mid-April. Rough back-of-the-envelope would have us with over 5000/day if we had reached the rate they are seeing. As it is, we are starting to see some increases here again and are trying to nip it in the bud against the backdrop of a bunch of anti-maskers and clueless young people who apparently can't put Instagram down long enough to put a mask on and keep it on.
