House Democrats ask Supreme Court to speed things up in Trump financial docs cases
Source: CNN
The House of Representatives asked the Supreme Court late Monday night to move faster so it can begin a renewed attempt to obtain documents from President Donald Trump's financial firms.
The court ruled Thursday that House committees could seek the documents, but it sent the case to a lower court to further review the subpoenas.
However, since judgments are not normally issued until 25 days after the Supreme Court ruling comes down, that limits the amount of time the House has to go back through the lower courts. Monday's motion asks the court to cut the 25 days short and accelerate the process.
Speed is of the essence, House lawyer Doug Letter wrote, because the current subpoenas die when Congress ends in January.

(43,478 posts)In Colonial times it took 2 months to float an army for a foreign invasion. Today it's 6-36 hours more or less. So why does our government still work at this slow pace? Deliberation is good, tradition is fine - recesses, appointments, holidays, blue slips, filibuster. But 3 weeks for court actions, for transfer to another jurisdiction, for a ruling. Democrats when in power should push to speed up the court system especially where the tactic of one or another party is delay, where the business of government is to be slow to run out the clock. Conflicts between the three branches of government should be expedited! Ahead of all other business. Taxpayers should push for change, we pay the bills.

(26,786 posts)The lower court is instructed to evaluate some factors that were supposedly missed the first time around... but whatever their decision is... it's almost certain to work its way back through appeals to SCOTUS. How could they hear those arguments and rule before the subpoenas expire?

(6,254 posts)if it was prejudicial to the government's case by not issuing the order forthwith. Unless statutorily they "Shall" wait 25 days to issue the ruling or order. But then again, we just learned that "Shall" doesn't mean "must" like we always thought it did. I wonder if SCOTUS will come up with a 4 part test for releasing rulings as well.

(6 posts)We need to push everyone to move as fast as they can so we can get the Orange Orangutan out of office as fast as we can. He's hurting everyone. I heard on WCPT how his niece is a Clinical Psychologist and her book will be very interesting. The Mafia boss comes from a horrible family.
