Citing surging cases, the Los Angeles and San Diego school districts will be remote-only in the fall

California’s two largest public school districts said Monday that instruction will be remote-only in the fall, citing concerns that surging coronavirus infections in their areas pose too dire a risk for students and teachers.

The Los Angeles and San Diego unified school districts, which together enroll some 825,000 students, are the largest in the country so far to abandon plans for even a partial physical return to classrooms when they reopen in August.

More than a third of California’s coronavirus cases are in Los Angeles County and San Diego County has had 18 community outbreaks over the past week, more than double the state’s acceptable threshold.

Best practices are emerging, economies are functioning for the most part, school will be a tragedy if opened to pandemic, and I suspect a lot of parents will not comply.

no way I’m showing up at an elementary school in 2 weeks. Nope! Not gonna happen. No reason to make money if I’m dead or too sick to enjoy spending it.

... but it should have been made a month ago. Better late than never, but the more time there is to prepare for the upcoming changes, the more successful they will be.

I'm sure most of the voters there would like them to - but as anyone who's lived there for a least a years can tell you, one Newport Beach Republican usually counts for 10 Santa Ana or Fountain Valley Democrats.

I remember the anti-immigrant protests on Main Beach, in Laguna, back during the Bush years.

Not a pretty sight.

School Superintendents can't be bullied by the Orange Pile of Shit in the White House into re-opening prematurely. Trump has no power to withhold payment to schools. That power is given to Congress, not the president. The entire country would be better served not paying attention to anything Trump says.

Teachers' unions have been saying NO WAY in San Diego. The district doesn't have the $$$ to take the chance. They would have to shut down and quarantine for 2 weeks after just ONE person tests positive. That basically means that the schools would be shutting down constantly. The schools need to reopen AFTER the rest of the community has ZERO cases for a long period of time. The financial aspect, more than health and safety, is what brought these new decisions.

As a former union rep for my school in San diego I know what really goes on and it isn't pretty.
