Court refuses to order Houston to host Texas GOP gathering

Source: AP

he Texas Supreme Court on Monday upheld Houston’s refusal to allow the state Republican convention to hold in-person events in the city due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The court dismissed an appeal of a state district judge’s denial of a temporary restraining order sought by the state Republican Party.

The state GOP convention had been scheduled to begin Thursday at Houston’s downtown convention center and was expected to draw thousands of participants.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, a Democrat, said last week that he had directed city lawyers to terminate the contract because he believed the event could not be held safely. He denied that the convention was cancelled due to political differences and cited the potential risk to service workers and first responders if the virus spread through the convention.

Like its seen from Trump's point of view. That its outrageous that a court REFUSES to ORDER a city to have his GOP convention. Like that was what he expected.

Here's a story from News Channel 4 in Jacksonville (Duval County) that ran just yesterday:

in some state up in the Moron Corridor of the country. Governors and mayors won't be able to override that one, but good luck to all the Chucks and Karens on finding hotel and motel accommodations anywhere near it, unless they can locate a base near a city with a Chump for a mayor.

Also good luck to them in a hangar in August. Should be a hot, sweaty, quarrelsome time, even for them.

Their convention starts this Thursday, (3 days from now) but they are already having committee meetings today.
They can't postpone it because they need to select national delegates.

The funny thing: They don't have time to plan it!

I doubt it, Dumdum won't allow that. It will be a smallish affair, all his true believer cultists not wearing their masks and swapping cooties for three days while they listen to the same tired, old bullshit from the same tired, old party.

I still think it will have to be in a blood red state on a military base. There is not enough lead time left to plan and execute any sort of online convention.

This is a local convention where they select Texas delegates to go to Trump's convention.

It's only for Texas and they are holding their convention this week.

He's been making noises about pulling out of Jacksonville since he's being sued. I thought Houston was on the list.

With the state GOP being booted out of there, perhaps he's going to have to rethink having one, at all. Maybe hold his pep rallies at airports or something, a modern take on the whistle stop campaigns of decades ago.

Montgomery County is to the north of Harris County/Houston. Montgomery is 95% white and is a cesspool of republican nut cases. There are a couple of KKK chapters active in this cesspool and so this cesspool May be perfect for the Texas GOP hatefest/convention

and nothing is going to change their hideous platform, one wonders why they're bothering, at all. Also, one wonders about the convention amenities available in the bustling metropolis of Conroe.

Dumdum is talking about pulling out of Jacksonville, entirely, or of holding it outdoors--in Florida, in August, height of heat, humidity, and tropical storms.

This is certainly entertaining.

Have their bacchanal of irresponsible governance elsewhere.

Everybody knows you can’t put 6,000 irrational people under one roof and expect good public health outcomes during the pandemic.

I grew up in Houston. Was rather upset that the repubs were insisting on going ahead with the convention.

Eta: Don’t want to see them gather in any of the large cities in the state. I recommended Abilene as an alternative recently. Rather red out there, and culturally they believe they’re better than everyone else in the state. Otherwise, they should have started working on their Zoom skills months ago and planned a virtual thing.

They should hold the convention in East Corncob, or some other godforsaken patch that might be more welcoming to the Republicans' brand of brain-dead fecklessness.
