Mick Mulvaney, the United States’ special envoy for Northern Ireland who previously served as President Donald Trump’s chief of staff, believes that America’s testing capabilities for the novel coronavirus are still way short of where they should be.

In an editorial published by CNBC, Mulvaney argues that the next economic stimulus package...............................

Chief among those shortfalls, he writes, is its ability to quickly test people for the disease and deliver their results in a timely fashion.

“I know it isn’t popular to talk about in some Republican circles, but we still have a testing problem in this country,” Mulvaney writes. “My son was tested recently; we had to wait 5 to 7 days for results. My daughter wanted to get tested before visiting her grandparents, but was told she didn’t qualify. That is simply inexcusable at this point in the pandemic.”


President Donald Trump has regularly boasted about the United States’ testing capabilities, and even held an event at the White House earlier this year with signs that declared, “America leads the world in testing.”

Most of the wait is due to backlogs in appointments or processing. Which can both be blamed on Trump's opposition to testing and reality.

...in a Chicago lab. He tells me that sample prep is around a half hour, but he can easily prep 6 at a time.
So, in a few hours he can get 6 to 12 done.
The problem is the samples are being delivered 24/7, and they've only got three analysts, working 6 10s.
As you said, they can't keep up.
According to him, there are bigger labs that have more hardware & people and can keep up.
But, as smaller labs fall behind, they pass on the oldest, not analyzed samples.
So, as the big labs pick up the slack, the samples are already 5 days old.
He was really hoping the Abbott test was good, because he & his coworkers are worn out.
They asked me to take a part time gig (nights), but it's 65 miles from my house.
That's a lot of driving and I'd likely be coming back at the beginning of rush hour.
I'd like to help, but too much car time.
