Teen survives 30 hours in US wilderness, hiding from gunman who killed father

Source: Associated Press

A 15-year-old boy hid for more than 30 hours in a US forest after a gunman killed his father during an Independence Day trip.

Two others were allegedly injured by the suspect, who was arrested on Saturday after a chase. His name wasn't immediately released.

Dr Ari Gershman of Danville, California was shot Friday while off-roading in a new four-wheel drive Jeep with his son, Jack, in the Sierra County wilderness.

Jack fled and called police to say he was lost, according to the Sierra County Sheriff's Office.

The same man is believed to have shot two other people during a separate attack in the same area on Friday, and they were hospitalised with non-life threatening injuries, the Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.

Ari Gershman took his 15-year-old son Jack on a popular off-roading trail near Poker Flat in the Sierra on Friday, excited to drive the red Jeep Rubicon he had bought the day before.

The novices were on trails they had only read about in the remote Tahoe National Forest when they pulled over at a fork, unsure which way they should go. A man driving an ATV pulled up behind the pair and Gershman asked for directions, according to his cousin, Marlo Meyers-Barer, who spoke to The Chronicle and shared details on social media.

“The man out of nowhere started shooting at the Jeep,” Meyers-Barer wrote. “Ari stepped on the gas to get out of harms way, but one of the shots ripped through the seat and hit him. He was able to get the Jeep stopped so Jack was able to run into the forest to hide.”

The 45-year-old Danville doctor died at the scene and his son spent 30 hours alone and lost in the dense woods, drinking from a stream, wearing only shorts and a T-shirt and covered in bug bites and scratches, before he was rescued. The alleged gunman was arrested shortly after Jack was found, following a police chase on his ATV. Moments before shooting Gershman, the man also allegedly shot and injured two other people nearby who survived, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

UPDATE: 10:51 p.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2020 - Sierra County officials say they arrested an Oroville man for the shooting that left one man dead and his son lost in the woods for 24-hours.

Officials say the missing juvenile was the 15-year-old son of Doctor Ari Gershman of Danville. According to officials, the son told dispatch he and his father were driving down a dirt road when 40-year-old John Conway shot his father.

The 15-year-old fled into the forest to escape so he could call for help.

While looking for the 15-year-old, officials say they found Gershman and his vehicle. The next day on the fourth, officials say they found the son, safe and in good physical condition.

Shortly after officers found the son, Conway approached two officers on his utility terrain vehicle, more commonly known as a side-by-side. Officials say he tried to run the two officers over before fleeing south where another officer was staged. The two ultimately collided.

A human being shot and killed in cold blood and a doctor committed to saving lives no less...

His poor son...how traumatized he must be to have seen his father die and then to be alone like that and afraid and fearing for his own life...

I am opposed to the death penalty, but I confess in moments like this, I think the appropriate punishment would be to let him run through the wilderness cold and thirsty and hungry and being shot at and hunted by his own weapon....

What the FUCK is the matter with people? It's a rhetorical question. I study the history of human awfulness for a living, and I know there's no answer.
