Trump says coronavirus therapy drugs 'more important' than vaccine despite $1.6bn investment
Source: The Independentent
Donald Trump on Tuesday called therapeutic drugs to treat coronavirus "more important" than a vaccine just hours after his administration cut a $1.6bn deal to give taxpayer funds to a Maryland company that has never brought a product to market to develop 100m does of a vaccine.
Therapeutic medicines "get you better," he said after his administration struck its largest deal yet towards vaccine development, this time with an unproven company. He ignored the fact that a proven vaccine would make Americans immune from catching and spreading the disease.

(44,982 posts)Flu vaccine is given every year. There are reasons to believe covid is not producing long lasting immunity, so vaccines might have to be given regularly as well.

(16,616 posts)He knows no vaccine will be available by November. So from his point of view, therapeutics are more important than the vaccine.

(12,000 posts)There's no need to rank them as to which is MORE important, but even with a vaccine, some people will still get COVID. And a vaccine won't help those already infected, or those who may get infected between now and when a vaccine becomes available.
And if a treatment can be developed more quickly, that in itself is a huge benefit. I'd take a truly effective treatment NOW over a vaccine 6 months from now.

(2,972 posts)A vaccine is likely a year or more away. The near term strategy to minimize deaths and suffering in the meanwhile is: Testing (as much as possible), contact tracing, distancing, hygiene and treatment.
Treatment was a mystery when this thing started - they didn't even discover until weeks into this that COVID patients shouldn't be lying on their backs. They've learned a ton since this think started and can knock down low hanging fruit that were unknown in the beginning.
Survival rates will go up as treatments are discovered. This is all we have until a vaccine comes out.

(6,251 posts)But, for the long term we really need a vaccine. Without a vaccine, the covid19 virus could be around for several more years.
It's not an either/or proposition.
Both are needed to get us through this pandemic.

(6,251 posts)I think that phrase disqualifies anything that he would say, since he is clearly out of his mind.
That's why I emphasized the word EFFECTIVE. It immediately leaves Trump out.
