Nike Pulls Redskins Online Merchandise, Hours After FedEx Demands a Name Change

Source: Newsweek

The Washington Redskins have avoided changing the team's nickname for more than 50 years of political pressure. Politicians and human rights advocacy groups could not find a way to make it happen. But in a span of a few hours on Thursday, two major corporate sponsors may have sacked the team's ability to keep moving forward with its name.

First, FedEx demanded the team change its name from Redskins. Why is that significant? FedEx holds the naming rights to the team's stadium, and the company could pull it sponsorship worth many millions of dollars if the team doesn't comply.

And on Thursday night, Nike no longer carries any Washington Redskins merchandise on its website—although all other 31 teams in the NFL are represented.

It's time to retire that team identity. Finally.

Maybe they can get their Statehood & a new name their Team.
Perfect timing.

What is DC going to name it's State, anyway?
State of Washington DC?
We already have a Washington.

there are some who are so red they would rather die than give in. Especially if trump makes a point of ridiculing them.

Believe it or not, some of the owners are so rich the team is just a hobby.

Not saying they will dig in their heels, but it wouldn't shock me.

Although Native Americans were named Indians by accident, the word was not used as a slur like Redskin. So I don't find it as bothersome... but I'm not NA. I wonder what percentage of NAs find it offensive, compared to those who find Redskin offensive? To me it's kind of like the difference between Negro (a word not intended as an insult, whose political acceptability changed over time) and the N word (which was always offensive).

Change the name to the Washington Rednecks. Their mascot can be some middle aged guy, tattered shirt, Confederate flag, overalls, hasn't seen the inside of a dentist office since the 90's, entire family strung out on meth and pills. Give the other side a taste of stereotypes and slurs. There would be screaming and caterwauling the like of which we've rarely heard, but I doubt they'd actually learn anything from the experience.

This wasn't meant to malign the Redskins, just poke a little fun at the whole issue.

Just so you know, the Giants don't play any games in New York any more; all home games are in New Jersey.
So the truth is they're the Jersey Giants, not the New York Giants.
please note: a Jersey Giant is a huge chicken. I'd like to see them use that as their logo.

RedTails, after the Tuskegee Airmen.

Not sure what other names would do. Basically every fierce animal has been used already.

I would think that turning to military mascot names might work - I don't know them. Buffalo soldiers has a lot of meaning, but "Buffalo" does not strike fear.

The red tail was used to identify the planes the Tuskegee Airmen flew, but the red tails also suggests the red tailed hawk; a fierce bird of prey.
